Monday is the official day when the Cowboys begin their voluntary workouts at Valley Ranch. However, several players have showed up during the last two weeks to get an early start to the season.

Wade Phillips said as many as 27 to 30 players showed up last week to work out. This week, he was getting reports that players such as Tony Romo, DeMarcus Ware and Bradie James were lifting and running.

There has always been a perception that Romo doesn't work out enough. Every few weeks, there's video surfacing of him playing basketball, golf or soccer somewhere.

"You can count on him anytime," Phillips said of Romo. "You can count on him during the season, count on him as a player. I don’t think he's missed a workout since I've been here."

However, other players do the same thing. If you see Miles Austin at a basketball game, does that mean he's not working out somewhere. If you run into Ken Hamlin going to the store, does that mean he's sitting at home getting fat?

It doesn't. The Cowboys have always been a well-conditioned team -- under Bill Parcells and now with Phillips.

"We have a great group that way overall," Phillips said. "We have a lot of good workers, [and] yeah I see them doing that going forward."

These guys get it. The core group of this team that have been here for years now

Romo, Barber, Austin, Witten, Ware, Ratliff, Bradie, Spencer, Jenkins, Newman, etc.

We've got a great nucleus on this team.

Veteran leaders like Kitna, Flo, Brooking, etc really help things too.

But there also lies the problem. A lot of the team around these guys don't seem to get it.

How do you know that?

On Victory Mondays last season, the entire team showed up to work out.

I think that's farthest from the truth.

This was the most team oriented Cowboys squad I have seen in awhile. The loss to Minnesota doesn't change that. These guys overcame a lot of scrutiny this season.

Felix Jones was among that group working out as well.

When one of our reporters interviewed him over a week ago, Jones said he was getting ready to head back to Dallas for off-season work. So he's been there at least a week, maybe longer (since I can't remember the exact day of the interview -- it was when Jones was shilling as a clothing spokesman).

Team unity and a desire to win was not an issue last year and it won't be this year either...I don't know where you are pulling that from? please explain...

Let me see here...a CONTINUITY of high levels of conditioning under both Bill Parcells AND Wade Phillips. Naw, that just couldn't be....and with Jerry being the constant between the two polar differences? Maybe polar observations is the wrong description...think?

Attitude grew under Bill, and now seems to have come voluntarily together through the time with Wade. Maybe they BOTH are good coaches...and Wade needing a Lombardi to even other considerations.

He doesn't either. It just sounded like a really cool thing to say when he was thinking about it.
