Jones wants to see some Romo of old
October 9, 2009, 11:14 AM
By: Tim MacMahon

Head coach Wade Phillips said this week that he doesn't believe that quarterback Tony Romo is being too cautious. But their boss would like to see a little bit more of Romo's freelancing skills.
Owner/GM Jerry Jones got a glimpse of classic Romo on the Cowboys' final drive in Denver, when Romo scrambled on fourth-and-3 to buy time to loft a throw to Sam Hurd that resulted in a 53-yard gain.
"I think, as much as anything, we all would like to see him maybe him when it's not a desperation juncture in the game maybe improvise more than we have," Jones said during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan. "I think that's probably what, if you look at his skills and what he can do really well, possibly a little more of that would be good.
"It's going to be a fine line between protecting the ball and having some of that [improvisation] that Romo can bring. He's still got all that you want." Romo is trying to find the fine line between making plays and placing an emphasis on protecting the ball.
"You're always going to want to utilize everything that you're capable of doing," Romo said yesterday. "You'd be selling yourself short if you didn't utilize all the tools at your disposal that you may have as an individual or a unit.
"For me, individually, it's about stay the course. Continue to get better. Don't waver off this path and jump the gun because of one game."
Jones definitely isn't jumping the gun on Romo. Jones emphasized that Romo, who he called the future of the franchise, is a quarterback capable of leading the Cowboys to the Super Bowl. A little more creativity on the field would help.

which is it

do you want the Romo who takes care of the football, or the free-wheeler?

I freakin' hate our FO and coaches right now, they just continue to put their foots in their mouths

It is both Romo being protective of the ball and being able to improvise and both can be achieved. I think Romo is doing the right thing stay the course continue to put in the work it will pay off in the end.

I agree that there is a fine line than can be achieved,a line somewhere between being tentative and reckless. One thing that has me concerned though, what if this year doesn't pan out?Does Romo evaluate himself again and try another completely different approach,if so that may lead to another set of problems.I guess the bottom line is to worry about this year instead of pondering "what if" scenarios.

Why doesn't do so designec rollouts or some PA bootlegs or something. For the money Romo is paid we shouldn't have to put our eggs in a basket and hope for "Romo magic". Ww need solid consistent play from the QB position with smart decision making and protecting the ball. We also need better play calling and pass protection.

Thanks for the input Jerry!

Well then you should have kept TO for at least one more year instead of leaving your QB out to the vultures. The Romo friendly offense you created is offensive. I know you had Felix in your plans Jerry but you have dont have a legit down field threat on the team. NFC East Defensive Coordinators rejoiced when you cut TO and other teams just dont respect your team.

Cant wait to hear an opposing "player" quote and not a "fan" quote, that this team just isn't that good without him. Even my wife recognize that this offense is "lackluster" w/o a deep threat. Thats just sad.

Jerry wants to see Romo's improv work
October 9, 2009 1:38 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been very careful with his words when discussing Tony Romo's performance, which is so disappointing. The owner is aware of how much heat Romo's been taking over shaky performances against the Giants and Broncos, so he's gone out of his way not to say anything remotely negative.

But on his weekly radio show Friday on "The Fan" in Dallas, Jones said he would like to see more of the old Romo. Actually here's exactly what he said via ESPNDallas.com's Tim MacMahon:

"I think, as much as anything, we all would like to see him maybe him when it's not a desperation juncture in the game maybe improvise more than we have," said Jones. "I think that's probably what, if you look at his skills and what he can do really well, possibly a little more of that would be good. It's going to be a fine line between protecting the ball and having some of that [improvisation] that Romo can bring. He's still got all that you want."

That's as close as Jones will come to criticizing Romo at this point in the season. He doesn't want to say anything that reflects a loss of confidence in his franchise quarterback. During his weekly visit with local reporters Thursday, Romo discussed rainbows, Lucky Charms and Jack Nicklaus. Here's the one thing he said that suggests he's planning to return to some of his improv skills:

"You're always going to want to utilize everything that you're capable of doing," Romo said yesterday. "You'd be selling yourself short if you didn't utilize all the tools at your disposal that you may have as an individual or a unit. For me, individually, it's about stay the course. Continue to get better. Don't waver off this path and jump the gun because of one game."

As Romo might say, perhaps there's something better at the end of the rainbow.

Any other owner talk about the teams strategy before a game more than Jerry Jones? Just shut it Jerry. Hell of a business man, a fool when it comes to what needs to be produced on the field.

Apparently when Romo acts like the Romo of old, nobody believes he can win. Apparently when Romo acts like the Romo of present, nobody believes he can win. Other than Romo himself and I, does anyone think Tony can win lately? Insane!

I still dont get how anyone can think Romo can be the "romo of old", when he doesnt have the WR to throw too that inflated his stats for three years.

you cannot take a guy's balls from him and expect him to be the same as before.

the press, the fans, the coaches all took Tony's balls. Please give them back to him.

Exactly. Off the top of my head I can't think of any other owners or gm's that talk about stuff like this as much as Jerry.

Lol! I am also one that was very vocal about this offense not going to be able to replace those 1,300 yards and 13-15 TD's a year. Plus all the attention T.O attracts on the field and how his presences loosens things up for the rest.

But....... Even T.O said Tony would be successful with or without him. Is Tony going to have the same numbers? Yards, yes. TD's, no. This is because without T.O we run for more TD's as opposed to throw for them. We have to.

The other problem that was foreseen is our ability to stretch the field without T.O and how dink and dunk would we get. Well, we're seeing it the last 2 games. Teams are stacking up the box against the run and are forcing us to beat press coverages now and we're not.

The question I have is how many GMs/Owners of other teams do you pay attention to?

I realize you said off the top of your head, but I think many of us are so Cowboys-tunnel visioned that we don't pay that much attn to any other team outside the NFC East.

Problem is protect the ball Romo has 4 int's and a fumble lost. It appears Romo is not elite QB status, when he is trying to stand tall in the pocket every play. I believe he needs to improvise to find lanes to throw in, otherwise he struggles to deliver the ball consistently.

The craziest part about it all is that Jerry really is telling the hopes and truth's of this team before game day. One would think Jerry would try and blow a little smoke up everyone's behind. Nope, not Jerry.

I just hope he doesn't hire another lame duck HC. One that can handle the media instead of Jerry always going out there but also a HC that doesn't yap as much as Gruden either. I feel Shanny would serve us well.

Our front office is "talking strong" because our offensive coaches are "coaching weak". This qoute would never have been uttered by Jones with Big Bill around. What a quote like this shows me is that Jones is not really happy about how Garrett has managed the offense, with respect to the QB.

But hey, that's passive-aggressive Jerry for you. This is no different than last year when he thought Barber should play, and instead of saying he hoped he could go he decided to instead question his toughness.

Even if we wanted to pay attention to other Owner/GM's we couldn't. Not many other teams have Owner/GM's. Oakland and Al Davis? Where else do we look? I certainly don't want to look too much at that crack pot.

Boy does that organization have a recipe for success. Jerry seems to think that's the model for success around here. Follow the Al Davis structure.

The worst part is, nobody would want to be Al's GM but a lot of other guys would want to be Jerry's. So who's more out of touch when it comes to football reality? Al has no choice now. Jerry does and wants no part of bettering what is destroying the on field success of this organization. Jerry......

I was just thinking the same thing. It's totally the case and rightfully so too.
