First of all, not a Barber fan (either of them). But it is what it is (talking about scheme & responsibilities), Ronde (and most cover 2 corners) is really a safety, but .1 yd is not much of a difference in terms of ypa. If its THAT close, you take the player that fits your scheme, or in the case of the All Pro selectors (official ones that is), you take the playmaker (5 INTs vs. 1 INT), or winner.
And yeah I know Z consults "experts", but Z used the same methods to choose Mario Edwards. Seriously, that was not good.
I'm not picking at you, Bat. I was just using your post to expand even more and address this nonsense.
I just thought comparing Barber to Newman was a good comparison, because putting up a 6.2 YPA when you are playing in a scheme that calls you to play heavy man to man is more
difficult than what cover 2 or zone CB have to do.
So, Newman's YPA is more impressive, imo. It's much easier for a zone CB or cover 2 CB to put up a better YPA, because they don't have as much territory to cover, and they get help deep. They can sink into zones and jump routes in front of them. The scheme helps them be more aggressive.
Plus, some people claim that Newman "doesn't make plays on the football" and, that was just one more comparison (to a real good player) that shows that he does. Barber has the scheme advantage, and Newman still tops him in two categories.
Plus, not all INTs result in TDs but they can be just as important and Newman has made those type of plays.
Sure, if you run a cover 2 scheme, you would like a player like Ronde Barber. However, Barber is limited and is protected by the scheme. Steve Smith has owned them.
So, Zimmerman should have taken Newman in 2003. No one is perfect. His lists are usually pretty stout, imo. Those guys are members of the press, too. They are just sole members whom can consult, evaluate, and choose for themselves.
Len Pasquarelli has picked Newman for his All Pro Team, too.
A few writers see his talent, production, performance, and value to the Cowboys.
People should consider the scheme or job description these CBs have when they compare them. That is one important variable that gets over looked.
Ronde Barber and
Terence Newman are two different types of players for example.
Terence Newman and
Asante Samuel are two different types of players for example.
If you want a zone CB, take Samuel.
If you want a man to man CB, take Newman.
