Notes from Steelers camp, Day 2
May 3, 2008 6:23 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's James Walker
Steelers rookie tailback Rashard Mendenhall sat out of both practices today after tweaking his hamstring, but head coach Mike Tomlin said resting him was a minor precaution. It was the second year in a row Pittsburgh's first-round pick hurt his hamstring in minicamp, as linebacker Lawrence Timmons suffered the same injury last year.
"It's becoming somewhat commonplace for some of these high-round draft picks for this type of this situation to happen to them during minicamp weekend,'' Tomlin said. "The schedule that these guys are on is really not conducive to preparing them to come in to meet what waits for them in terms of the minicamp.''

That's all basketball players wear, and they tweak stuff all the time. ;)

By not warming up properly and trying to go full speed. See Jason Hatcher last season.

By stretching a tight muscle too far. And the point they made about the schedule helping cause these problems is probably justified.

Wasn't there a baseball pitcher who broke some ribs by coughing to hard?

Baseball players have to be the biggest weenies ever.

I'll give that award to soccer players. Everytime they go down, they roll around like they just broke every bone in their body. 5 minutes later, they are back on their feet running full speed.

Try standing at home plate with someone throwing a hard ball 90 mph inches from your body. Or imagine the pitcher standing less than 60'6" from home plate when those line drives come screaming back. It's not for the faint of heart.

I'd put my vote in for soccer players. They are the biggest fakers in the world ... even worse than NBA players.

Sorry any sport where some of the best players, john Kruk and Lenny Dykstra, were chain smokers and guys like John Beck and David Well are considered athletes doesnt get the nod.

Sure NBA and FIFA players sell to get calls but that is just part of the game and once that is done they come back and paly just as hard and do not half step.

Batters are not being aimed at typically and pitchers are taught to keep their eyes open during their delivery so they can make a play on the ball. Getting hit in the head with a line drive like John Wasdin is certainly horrific but so rare as to be almost inconsequential.

OTOH the big men in the NBA give and take a pounding. Have you seen the type of punishment in the post that guys like Josh Howard and Shaquille O'neal dole out or the types of fouls guys like Robert Horry and Rasheed Wallace give to guys that drive to the basket. Watch Iverson or Ginobilli relentlessly attack the hoop and try and say they are weak or soft.

In soccer guys are running full speed and I do not know if you have ever blindsided by a slide tackle running full speed but i can tell you it doesn't feel good. In soccer you fight for the ball. What do you do in baseball? You hit it and throw it. Give me a break.

Something I thought about today while listening to the 2 radio guys talking to Jerry. One of them pronounced Mendenhall, Mendenthall, and Jerry said something like it sounded like a cough medicine or something.

Anyway they made me think about all the RBs that were stars for the Cowboys, they all had short last names, Thomas, Hill, Dorsett, Smith, those were the star/superstar RBs.

The others like Doug Dennison, Preston Pearson, Hambrick, and any others that had long last names were fillins until the Star/Superstar was drafted.

Now we have had FBs with long last names, such as Robert Newhouse.

Yes, they made the right choice in choosing Felix.

Just something I thought of, it is corny, I just want to post something, it is boring, I cannot wait till TC starts.

I've tweaked something while completely naked... but I can't really go into that here.

Once saw a kid in little league hit square in the glasses by a line drive. Shattered both lenses and caused a lot of bleeding, not sure what happened to him after that, but it wasn't pretty.
