How long will it take for Tony Romo to be Tony Romo?
i
Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas -- In accepting the Nancy Lieberman Lifetime Achievement Award at the Dream Ball Gala last spring, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo proclaimed, “We’re going to win a Super Bowl next year.”

Romo’s season has not gone the way he or anyone thought because of a broken collarbone and as a result the Cowboys’ season has not gone the way they or anyone thought. But on Tuesday, Romo dipped his toes into the Super Bowl well again, this time tweeting a clip from the movie Major League.

If Romo can rally the Cowboys from their 2-7 hole, then, referencing Jeremy Mincey’s comments last week, he would be a football Jesus.

It would make all of Romo’s signature plays in which he made something out of nothing look like child’s play. The Cowboys are tied for the worst record in the NFC. Only the Cleveland Browns (2-8) have a worse record.

They haven’t won since Sept. 20, with Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel going 0-7. And yet there is hope again with Romo’s return from injury this week. There is a difference between optimism and realism.

That is the million dollar question. Will we get last year's Thanksgiving Romo or the Romo we saw in the Philly rematch?

I expect we'll see the same sort of player we see to start the season every year. Not including the back-injury year last year. In other words, a fairly game-ready QB. He did go through camp and two games before taking, what, 6 weeks off from throwing. Then two weeks of easing himself back into the game.....

Let's put it this way, I'm still more concerned about the rest of the team around him than I am about the QB.

he'll be back to 100 percent in the third game.

if he doesn't get injured again first.

I'm concerned about our QB whos being put into another unfair situation again. Theoretically, he has to go 7-0 or 6-1 for playoff contention. I can see him trying to do too much.

He's definitely going to try to do too much.

But that's pretty much Tony, anyway, right? It's not like he's going to come in and not try to do whatever it takes to win. We'll see if the rest of the team is capable of playing better behind him or not, finally.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Exactly how I feel about it as well. I just know for a fact now how much he was trying to do for much of his career with the situations he has been placed into. It just does not seem fair, but I guess he likes it that way.

So you think that it won't be like the first game back from the back against the 49ers? Obviously two different injures, back surgeries and a broken clavicle. I think the mental part will be another hurdle. He will be ducking on throws, just that little flinch at the end to absorb a hit - of course I'd do the same thing.

Man - I hope you're right!

I definitely don't think it'll be like that. The picks from that SF game were all coming off of play action if you remember, where he had his back to the coverage briefly and then tried to put the ball into windows when he didn't have his usual torque because of the back problem. This won't be like that because it's not a joint, and there's no muscular issue.

He's been through camp and he's had two weeks to get up to speed, so it's not like there should be any problems with the installation of the offense or with the personnel. If he's off, it'll be because it's been 6 weeks since he's had any game-speed practice and that could be a factor, but with Tony's experience it's probably not going to be a huge one. We'll also probably have both Butler and and Smith and Williams active, and he's got no experience with those guys at all. But that's stuff's all stuff he ought to be able to work around.

I guess the mental part could be an issue, but it's a healed bone. He's had the same injury before, and we've seen this guy play with broken ribs and broken bones in his back. How much is a healed clavicle really going to slow him down?

I'm more worried about the CBs and still concerned about our ST coverage teams. I think both of those areas are likely more significant problem areas for us than Tony's return is going to be. We're going to get a massive upgrade at the QB position, no matter how you slice it.

i will gladly take trying to do too much and losing vs. JG's trying to do too little and losing

I expect him to be rusty and it wouldn't hurt the other guys around him to pick up their game until he gets back in rhythm.

I know one thing...this is the one week I'm all in for any oline holding penalties. I rue the lineman who let's Tony gets sacked Sunday.
