Mike Williams would be my #1 surprise bust. No doubt about it.
I find that very easy to believe.

I still remember how you were pimping him. Of course that same boat was pretty full at that time also. No one could have forseen how poorly his NFL career has been thus far.

I knew Russell Erxleben in High School. He was a jerk back then and he was a jerk getting busted at Texas stealing CB radios out of cars.

He may still be in prison in Louisiana for committing financial services fraud and stealing money. Tony Franklin was a lot better.

I was a big time Peyton Manning shill, to the point that I said Leaf would be a bust to people around here.

Mandarich's failure shocked me.

Robert Gallery's so far does.

Steve Emtman and Quentin Coryatt was fairly shocking to me.

Emtman was disappointing not in that he didn't have the talent, he did. It was sad because of his injuries. I really believe he would have been an annual pro-bowler if he could have stayed healthy. He showed flashes his rookie year.

I thought Mike Williams would really be good.

I think it's funny that Kiper still believes that he was right in touting Trent Dilfer because Dilfer went on to win a Super Bowl. It's not like the Ravens won in spite of Dilfer or anything like that.

Our boy Mayock had Mike Williams pegged. He flat out said he couldn't get seperation and he didn't have him as highly rated as everyone else.

My biggest miss was JJ Stokes. I thought he was a monster WR that would be great. I was disgusted when our arch-rival San Fran traded up for him. I sat in shock all afternoon. Goes to show you never know.

The guy I thought was going to be a star in the NFL was QB Cade McNown out of UCLA. Watching him play in college I thought he had all the tools to be a great QB in the pros but he completely blew it by the time he got there. He held out, showed up out of shape, had a bad attitude, didn't work hard, you name it.

The Bears took him with the 12th pick in 1999 and started 15 games over the next 2 seasons. He was mostly horrible and his attitude got him benched and released. He drifted around the NFL for a couple of years but never played in another game.

I thought he was a sure thing but he completely let me down. :bang2:

WR Dwayne Jarrett still has time to redeem me for my high opinion of him, we'll see.

Is there anyway to access the old archives from that previous board. I can't remember what I thought. Ahhh, the advantage of becoming senile.

5. 1990: Andre Ware, QB, Houston -- No. 7 overall pick by the Detroit Lions
He had a tremendous college career, capped by winning the Heisman Trophy in 1989. At Houston he played in the run-and-shoot offense, an offense that the Detroit Lions were implementing. It looked like a perfect fit, but it never panned out. Ware was never able to beat out Rodney Peete, whom the Lions drafted a year earlier in the sixth round. Ware's career amounted to 14 games (six starts) over four seasons.

I really don't think Andre Ware got a fair shot in Detroit. He'd go in and do just as good as Rodney Peete, but since he wasn't considerably better than Peete, they'd bench him. THose morons in Detroit didn't understand that if he was already as good as Peete with little experience, he'd be BETTER than Peete if he were given a chance to gain some experience.

Not saying he could have been worth that pick, but he sure as hell wasn't given a fair shot.

Agreed.

Kudos to Kiper for admitting past mistakes.

Few journalists or media types ever have the guts or class to admit they were wrong.

Kiper is slipping. He omitted someone. I remember him throwing a hissy fit during ESPN's draft day coverage over the Colts selecting Trev Alberts in the top 10 in the early 90's. They interviewed the Colts GM and asked him about Kiper's opinion. He responded by saying something like, "Kiper? Who the hell is 'Mel Kiper'? My so-and-so (don't remember) knows more about drafting than him." Classic stuff and I still agree with him to this day.

I've never been a Mel Kiper fan. He spouts off too much damn info and hopes that enough of it sticks in a viewer's mind long enough to lay claim to being considered a draft guru IF his choice and a team's eventually match. Please. I'll put Mayoch (sp?) over Kiper any day and I'm not too high on him, but at least, he catches his breath when offering his insight about players and where he thinks a player (singular) slots for certain teams.

OK, this struck me as funny. Detroit is listed three times in the Top 10 busts, and Cleveland is in there twice. Half of the top 10 busts between two teams!! lol!

x3 - Detroit Lions
x2 - Cleveland Browns
x1 - San Diego Chargers
x1 - Green Bay Packers
x1 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
x1 - New Orleans Saints

Thank God we are not among those listed. I can't really think of any top-10 picks we've blown.

I'm sure someone will bring up Scott Appleton, who we selected with the 4th pick in 1964, but that was not OUR pick as we were making the selection for the Steelers after trading it to them for veteran WR Buddy Dial.

Appleton wasn't really a bust anyway, he just decided that he would play for the AFL Oilers instead, who had also drafted him that year, since he was a Texas guy and wanted to stay closer to home.

Edit: I guess technically, Steve Walsh, who was essentially taken with the 1st pick in the 1990 draft (supplemental pick in 1989), was a bust but we got a lot out of trading him.

Lawrence Phillips should be on the list. Maybe not top 10 but perhaps top 15.

I've always liked Kiper. He was a breath of fresh air when they trotted him out way back in the early 1980s. He was one of us ... a draftnick. But he took it a step further and created a business for himself, working out of his parents' basement and eventually drawing the interest from Baltimore Colts GM (at the time) Ernie Accorsi.

I can see how his authoritative manner can grate on people, but I still like the guy. He's a genuinely nice guy.

As for my busts, I'm with Thumper on Cade McNown. I totally missed on him. And I also missed big on J.J. Stokes. Must be something about UCLA.

I'm sure there have been others.

I was hoping mike williams would fall to us at #11 in 2005 boy am I glad he didnt and boy am I glad we got DWARE

I remember when this forum was mad with Mike Williams love. I didn't know if he would be a flop. But I wasn't among those who wanted him, especially not after sitting out a year.

I'm glad the receiver-hungry Lions ended that debate here.

Thank you, Mike Martz. :D
