1. Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys have three outside linebackers who can get after opposing quarterbacks and DeMarcus Ware is as good as it gets at the position. Ware can do it all with his rare blend of quickness off the ball, pure speed and ideal body type for the position. He sacked the quarterback 14 times last year, but his ability to stay with backs and tight ends in coverage is often overlooked and Ware is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate who keeps getting better. Greg Ellis returned from injury to have a very productive 2007 season while Anthony Spencer, last year's first-round pick, is going to be tough to keep of the field due to his ability to rush the quarterback. For now, though, Spencer is simply an exceptional No. 3 outside linebacker who could see time on throwing downs and make things very difficult on opposing protection schemes. Bradie James plays inside on the strong side and is a thumper who is always around the football. Zach Thomas came on board to finish his career at home in Texas and will play alongside James on the inside. Thomas played in a 3-4 alignment some in Miami and was very effective, and the transition to playing a 3-4 full-time should not be difficult for such a fundamentally-sound player. Dallas does not have much invested in Thomas so the risk is minimal, but if he can stay healthy it will be interesting to see how much he has left in the tank. Bobby Carpenter has yet to live up to his first-round selection and has shuffled from inside to outside, and while he does provide depth he needs to step up and become more of a contributor. Kevin Barnett is yet another talented young player who will find it hard to get on the field unless injuries intervene, which just goes to show how great this group is overall.

Whether the "hype" is something the team will live up to, one thing is for certain: the near universal "hype" pretty much proves from 3 party sources that all of you moron Skins fans who said the Cowboys weren't any good or that the Commanders are better were just plain and flat out wrong. If the Cowboys weren't this good, there would be near universal "hype."

The end of that article kind of made me lose credibility to the writer.

It says Burnett will have a hard time getting on the field. He will see the field plenty on passing downs. He will definitely get his chance. I believe he is in his contract year, and I would definitely like to keep this kid around.

To be honest ESPN is right about this, why? because Cowboys have starters behind starters in their linebacking core....

Bobby Carpenter should have a chance to compete with Zack Thomas... Kevin Burnett should have a chance to compete for the same position also... May the best man win.

Has there been any further clarification on this? When they announced Carpenter's move to the 'mo' spot where Burnett was the primary back-up last year, it seemed to suggest that he was supplanting Burnett. Has Burnett moved over, or are Thomas, Carpenter, and Burnett all fighting for the same spot?

That would seem to leave our other spot inside rather thin if the two didn't switch roles.

That would seem to be the smart thing to do, as this would provide depth for both positions, but I continually see people suggesting that Burnett and Carpenter are playing for the same spot. I guess we'll find out in 9 days.

Yes they are clearly a High-School level talent. But since they clearly have absolutely no talent, and no one on this team would even start for the Dolphins, shouldn't Gibbs have won Coach of the Year for taking this team to the playoffs last year?

I am actually indifferent. I really don't care what is being written in June/July. They said all the same things about the Giants last year. They said the Browns were going to have a top-10 pick.

Time and time again, these "experts" come out, make all these pre-season predictions and rankings, only to have them turned completely upside down by the time first month of the season is over.

Funny enough, our solid Linebacker squad is largely what it is because of Bill Parcells infatuation with the position... then he takes off to Miami, and still helps us with the linebacker position with the whole Zach Thomas thing.

His big mission was to make Dallas' linebacker corp the best in the league, and then before it happened, he left, and then made it a reality after joining the brass of the Dolphins. That's irony.
