Loss of defensive QB Orlando Scandrick hurts Cowboys in NFC East

OXNARD, Calif. -- As the injuries kept piling up for the Dallas Cowboys during training camp, the team reminded itself that none were serious enough to any of the players they are truly counting on in 2015.

That changed Tuesday night.

Cornerback Orlando Scandrick suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his right knee which will cost him the season and cost the Cowboys one of their most valuable defenders.

Scandrick was the Cowboys' best cornerback in 2014. In 14 games, he had 55 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, nine pass deflections, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. But his worth to the defense is more than just the statistics.

Scandrick's ability to cover the slot makes him different than most corners in the league. He understands route concepts, leverage and defensive schemes to make sure he knows what not to do perhaps more than what to do.

Good opportunity for Patmon to take over the slot CB role...

Yep. What Scan did was last year was good, but it was last year, and the start of this new season did not look too promising, unless your Scan's bank account. The contract restructure that Stephen was hesitant about; the drama between he and Ms. TMZ; his sore knee before the total blow out, all of that makes me glad we have Patmon ready to step in.

I agree 100%...yes the loss stinks but at least their is NFL ready talent depth in the secondary this year vs years past. Next man up!

I hate it happened to him but it's good they're deep at that position, as horrible as it sounds this actually works out well for a potentially talented player they might have had to cut.

This hurts on and off the field, but the season is gonna move forward anyway.

Never liked Scandrick - I wish him well but I won't miss him at all. Never wanted to pay him , a glorified nickel back. If you recall - Green Bay coming up the field after the Dez catch no catch - Rodgers throws a wobbling duck right in front of OS and he had no move on the ball. Had his head been up he steps and picks for 6.

He is known for his slot coverage skill. But he isn't a playmaker.

He was our best CB. Yeah, he was probably a better slot CB than outside CB but he was still our best outside CB.

It's a big loss. Does that mean the season is over? Of course note, but some here trying to act like we just lost our 5th string CB and that the media is wrong for thinking this is a big blow is hilarious.

That was last year. Not a criticism of Scandrick but what he accomplished last year meant nothing. He had to go out and prove his worth all over again. Archer knows this but then again, he is Todd Archer: writer of crap.

This team needed a jolt -- a reminder that nothing stays the same -- and losing Scandrick may be it.

Scandrick was and still is one of the best CBs to perform on our roster over the past several years. I don't understand the hatred but I chalk it up to pet hate. Just as I have my regular pet cats that I enjoy watching slightly more than others, there are those out there that just have to hate something.

That said, I share the feeling of those that like Patmon and think he can step in admirably. I've been really impressed with his ability to maximize his performance in limited opportunities to this point. I believe Patmon is up for the challenge and the media will eventually eat their words.

Any mention of Mo Claiborne stepping into that role loses all credibility here. Lame lame lame. How about we just let Mo take a few positive steps onto the field during an actual game without twisting a pinkie toe before we start talking about him making any differences this year.

Strange chain of events thus far to start the year. I need to see more normalcy out there.
