I'm hearing that the Dallas Cowboys have a lot of interest in LSU defensive end Tyson Jackson (6-4, 295) heading into the draft. Jackson's not a great pass-rusher, but he would have a chance to replace Chris Canty in the Cowboys' 3-4 scheme.

It looks like the Cowboys will allow Canty to explore free agency. If Jackson somehow slips to No. 51 (and I think there's a chance), the Cowboys would love to take him.

Much more to come on this front.

if the cowboys do this, this is why they are dumb, when canty got hurt, the defense suffered, now your talking about using a top draft pick on a position that takes 2 to 3 years to learn, and you could have signed canty and used that top pick on a need,

we need more help at offensive line, safety and linebacker, not at defensive end

and most likely a young speedy wr and punt returner

Yeah, LSU scares me. I don't even think of Spears, for some reason Skyler Green always comes to mind.:D

With Canty on the way out the door, Tank already gone and Bowen a possible RFA defection, the Cowboys are going to have to replace 3 of their 6 defensive linemen from last year's roster. I don't see how anyone could say DL isn't a need. Is there another area on the team where we're having to replace half of the players from last year's roster?

This is why the 2007 playoff loss to the Giants was such a killer. The sweet spot of opportunity doesn't stick around long. Pretty soon the holes start opening up faster than you can fill them. Then again, it doesn't help filling holes when you give away a 1st and a 3rd for a WR who is going to be on the open market in a few months anyway.

Tyson would be pretty athletic for a 3-4 DE. I didn't realize he was up to 295 lbs.

Hardly. You can't resign everybody. We haven't had to deal with this for a long time since we've been pretty bad up until recently, but when you're good, you have to let some decent players walk and look for new blood. Every good team out there does it.

Canty was a starter but Tank made barely any plays and Bowen made even fewer, it's not the end of the world to have to get a few more backups of that caliber. The only notable player leaving will probably be Canty.

Are we trading up because he won't be there at #51?
If this guy is a 1st round, even an early 2nd round prospect, this is a terrible terrible draft.

It is a bad draft. Last year there were quite a few prospects that got me interested, this year, I couldn't be bothered. Maybe it's the fact that we don't even have a shot at the top talent, kind of sucks when you get blown out 44 - 6 in the last game of the season but can't even draft till the end of the first day.

But last year there were a lot of good players that I wanted to see where they landed even if we didn't get them, this year is nothing like that.

There is very little chance this happens unless some drastic things change between now and April. There are at least three teams who could use him before our pick.

Same here. I'm a little wary of players from these mega-programs that are darn near like pro teams. You better make sure players from there REALLY love football and will be a good pro.

Couple other thoughts:

1. Mosley's had good info the last couple of drafts, but that's right before the draft, not two months before.

2. If I were in the Cowboys organization, I wouldn't tell Mosley anything. All he does is trash the team.

With several teams slated for the 3-4 conversion, he could easily go in the first/early second. I don't think many teams share your opinion about him. Defensive ends always get overdrafted, even run-first ones like Jackson.

Who out of that list would you consider a big loss?

Bowen is a journeyman restricted free agent who I think will be back.

The Cowboys will happily let Tank Johnson leave, the guy talked more than he ever produced.

And Canty is a solid player, but hardly a world-beater. And he's definitely not worth his reported asking price.

I'd like to see the team draft a true NT type in Brace and move Ratliff to DE to replace Canty. I see that as a net gain up front.

I don't think he is saying any of them are huge losses. But the defensive line is going to be a very real need soon if Canty leaves. Since we are unlikely to make a big FA signing like Olshansky, we will need to secure a starter. And no, I do not believe Hatcher is capable.

Regardless of who we draft at 51, we will have to get fortunate with a quality starting type picking that late. That is where the Roy Williams trade hurts, regardless if he is going to actually start producing or not.

What makes you think RW will be on the open market in a few months? I'm curious? Or was this a throw away line?
