ESPN on DC search

hire a young firebrand who wants to attack on defense--someone with an imaginative scheme

One guy under Capers has really did a great job in GB with the LB and that is Kevin Greene. I think it is just a matter of time before he gets a DC position.

How do you know Garrett didnt tell Jones to interview Moss?

more like Capers told Garrett that Moss was an up and comer and since we could not get Capers you ought to look at MOss.

Who is Moss by the way?

He is the assistant HC in GB.

yeah, I saw that, just did not know any background. Looks like he was a candidate for the Raiders job when Cable was up in the air last year.

Interesting that the Packers have essentially 2 DC's and can block teams from interviewing both of them - is that right?

Maybe they let Capers walk and have Moss be their DC!

Who exactly were they going to hire mid-season that knew something about the current defense already? Pasqualoni has DC experience and has been with the team for some time. He was pretty much the only choice for DC for the remainder of the season.

He's not saying that to criticize Garrett, he's saying that for the same reasons you are - criticizing the posters here that think Jerry just signs people without talking to the coaches.

You're right - Garrett really didn't have a choice...just promote from within and go with it.

I guarantee you Garrett has full control once he's head coach. Jerry has seen the light.

Plus people don't know how GM's work...most GM's in the NFL (someone stop me if anything sounds way off base) consult with the scouting staff according to the coaching staff's desires, etc. They then meet with agents, etc. in acquiring/releasing/trading talent according to those measurables set forth by the coaching staff for the scouts.

Basically, coaches tell the scouts what to look for, scouts go try and find it, confirm with coaches, and they tell the GM to make it happen.

His official title (according to GB.com) is Assistant Head Coach/Inside Linebackers, so I think he can walk if he gets a DC job. I don't know for sure.

I don't see Green Bay letting Capers go anywhere unless he becomes a HC.

Green Bay can be outbid though.

From reading that article they can block any attempt from another team when it is not for the head coaching position.

I don't think I really care about Moss anyway.

The NFL allows certain windows for teams assistants to interview for HC jobs, they made this change several yrs ago IIRC.

I dont think Moss would really be interviewing for the HC job, rather I think he migh be a DC candidate.

This is what Jerry does.

He knows Garrett is his HC so he is using the "process" to find his coordinators.

Garrett, Sherman, Moss is extremely likely imho.

Jerry is an idiot at some things but genius at others.
His method here works.

You interview a guy as Head Coach which no team can block, convince them they'd be a good fit here as a Coordinator and also a long term HC candidate. They go back to their team and ask to leave. Voila, you have your coordinator.

Most head coaches won't block assistants from getting promotions. Those kinds of coaches would struggle to ever hire assistants again.

:hammer:

That's what it looks like to me as well

Winston Moss was a player in the NFL for the Bucs and mostly Raiders and I believe some time on Seattle. He played his college ball at the U with the great Miami teams.

Moss began his coaching career in 1998 as a defensive quality control assistant for the Seattle Seahawks. He was hired by the New Orleans Saints in 2000 as defensive assistant/quality control, he was promoted to linebackers coach near the end of that season to replace John Bunting, who departed to become head coach at the University of North Carolina. Moss was hired by the Packers to become their linebackers coach on January 19, 2006. He was promoted to assistant head coach by head coach Mike McCarthy on January 15, 2007. Following a disappointing 2008 season for the Packers, Moss was the only major defensive coach not to be fired by McCarthy.

I like it, he knows the Capers system. He has some of that Miami and Raider attitude. I have heard he is coming up in the world as a coach. I have heard Jerry is talking to him and yes I believe it is about the DC job, with Garrett's blessing.

Moss sounds interesting. I want a guy that attacks; I have had enough of bend AND break and 5-10 yd cushions on WRs on third and 5 and the other crap we have dealt with here.

Heard, I think, on NFL Network sometime Monday that Jerry will talk to Moss this week. It is not unprecedented for assistants to talk about other jobs while in playoffs. Wannstedt and Norv both took other jobs while in playoffs with Dallas. I think it is really up to the team if they want to allow it.

Maybe he brings Kevin Greene along to be LB coach his attitude and craziness would be great for Spencer.
