The Patriots have been stockpiling draft picks throughout the Bill Belichick era, creating questions about when he intends to use them all.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter says that the Patriots may have positioned themselves to make a run at Stanford’s Andrew Luck, who is expected to go first overall next season.

Schefter says the Patriots could offer two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a first-round pick the following season to the team with the first overall selection -- if the drafting team is set at the quarterback position.

They clearly have the ammo to try to get him.

This may be stupid, but if New England were willing to offer that much, and I needed a QB, I'd refuse. Again, this could be the bone head move of the century, but if I'm Buffalo or Miami or anyone else that will want a QB, I'd pass on the deal.

Doubtful, but they wont be the only one's. Several teams I think have an extra 1st next yr, and will probably end up with much worse records than the Pats.

I also doubt the Pats would have wasted a 3rd on Mallett if their intent was to manuever around for Luck one season later.

That's a steep price, but if it lands them the next Aikman then it's worth it,,, especially considering how well they typically draft. They can give up their early picks and still hit on enough picks to fill their holes.

Not their style to blow all their picks on one player.

I don't think any team will trade the pick that can get Luck. What's being offered will not matter. Brady just signed a longterm deal and says he wants to play 10 more years. I highly doubt NE would trade 5 picks in the top two rounds for anyone.

Would be pretty brilliant if that's the case, I don't think Mallet would stop them from going after Luck.

Actually, I read that the Pats and the Browns are the only teams to have two firsts next year. Regardless, if Luck is all that, and I have the first pick in the draft, and I need a frachise QB, I'm not passing on him.

" if the drafting team is set at the quarterback position."

How many teams drafting #1 over-all are set at QB. Usually to get the #1 your team sucks and mostly due to bad QB play.

Only way that would be possible would be the team with the #1 pick not needing a QB. Which is highly doubtful.

If Luck is as good as everyone thinks he is and he doesn't have a bad Sr. year and he comes into the draft next year as the next John Elway, no team picking #1 will trade that pick no matter how many picks someone offered them.

unless he is the next John Elway or Eli Manning and refuses to play for the team in position to take him with the top pick.

I don't think Luck is the next Aikman or Elway or Marino or Brady. I think he's going to carve himself his own piece of history. Luck is the first Luck.

That's not what they'd be offering. They'd be offering Mallett + some subset of those picks.

But what team with the first overall selection is likely to be "set at the QB position"?

When Andrew luck comes out the team has the top pick will not trade it away. He will be there franchise qb for years to come. No way any team trades that pick

If I'm the 49ers, I offer my whole draft for this guy.

Yeah I think Kapernick was an insurance plan if they don't draft high enough to get him

Nodbody's trading out of Andrew Luck. Even if you're set at QB, you take him and see what you've got and trade your other guy if you think he's going to pan out.

:hammer:

No one is trading out of that pick next year.

Well I wouldn't trade out of the number one pick next year if Luck's fame stays the same. But we have another year of football for him to play. His fortune may change although I wouldn't bet that way.
