ESPN reporter believes the Patriots could be targeting Stanford QB Andrew Luck

I don't think Luck is the next Aikman or Elway or Marino or Brady. I think he's going to carve himself his own piece of history. Luck is the first Luck.

not really his dad oliver was the first Luck and was a pretty good QB in college but not a great nfl qb but his son could be another great QB.

" if the drafting team is set at the quarterback position."

How many teams drafting #1 over-all are set at QB. Usually to get the #1 your team sucks and mostly due to bad QB play.

That's not what they'd be offering. They'd be offering Mallett + some subset of those picks.

But what team with the first overall selection is likely to be "set at the QB position"?

Well the Panthers will probably suck again, Newton probably won't start from day one. Who knows what the Browns or Titans would do, you just never know.

No team with the #1 pick is going to bypass the chance to draft a Peyton Manning type who could singlehandedly keep them in Superbowl contention for the next decade.

One that just drafted Cam Newton.

Panthers had some real bad luck; they are not quite as bad as their record suggested. I see them getting about 4 wins next year. It is really hard to figure out who will just totally stink next year. All the teams that picked in the top 5 are getting better.

If I was offered two firsts and two seconds; it would be a huge decision. If I was even decent at the QB position you would have to think about taking it instead of luck. You get a chance to get 4 top 50 or so players. If your team is that bad; you might have to think about it hard. Of course if Luck looks as good next year as he did this year it would almost be impossible for anyone to trade down.

If I'm the 49ers, I offer my whole draft for this guy.

And then you'd be similar to what the Panthers did this year.

Last year the Panthers drafted two qbs in day 2. Clausen/Pike. This year they took one at #1 overall before really giving either of those two a fair chance.

This year the 9ers took Colin Kapernik in the 2nd.

Trust me, Kapernik on the roster will not dissuade them from drafting Luck if the opportunity presents itself.

When Andrew luck comes out the team has the top pick will not trade it away. He will be there franchise qb for years to come. No way any team trades that pick

Unless the team with the top pick has already spent a #1 on a QB.

I'd say there are also several teams who would trade that pick away for:

3 - 1st Rounders

2 - 2nd Rounders

Hell, any team that wouldn't take that is foolish. And I said a while back that the Patriots could make this move. All that trading they do that supposedly "hasn't helped them" has put them in a position to land any player they want, any year.

Carolina could return to the top spot next year. If so, I think the Panthers would gladly auction the pick. But they probably wouldn't want to move into the bottom half of the round.

Whoops, see that this was covered.
