You think maybe this is a reason why some of the owners want to do away with the Salary Cap. Or does this have nothing to do with that?

cap or not it doesn't matter. tier 2 players are being paid tier 1 money simply because they were the best turd in the toilet bowl vs. just another turd.
Actually, yes, I DO think this has a little to do with why the owners want to do away with the current CBA (which in effect eliminates the salary cap). The ONLY thing that all owners seem to be in agreement with is that the players are getting way to big of the slice or NFL revenue pie.
One thing to keep in mind is that it's very few teams going ape**** with these high dollar deals (mainly the Raiduhs). I don't think it will be long before teams just start to look at the big picture and say "You know what? A CB just isn't worth that kind of money." It's all cyclical. Remember the days when the RBs were making boatloads of money and LTs were getting squat? Or MLBs signing huge deals and CBs were JAGS? What's eventually going to happen is that these guys (especially older ones *Tnew*) are going to price themselves right out of the market (especially if the owners agree to cut into the players' portion of revenue sharing). I'll guarantee you there are 31 owners out there right now ready to cut Al Davis' balls off. The guy is throwing mad money around to a bunch of has-beens, never beens, and hope you'll be's like there's no tomorrow. I'm not so sure that Davis is actually "setting the market" for the NFL. I also think you'll see teams like San Fran and Philly with a bit of buyers remorse once they realize that their teams have REAL holes and one player (who MIGHT have the opportunity to impact the game maybe 6-7 times a game) who is eating up 10 million in cap space on a 53 man roster.
The way that the NFL is set up for offensive success is even more reason not to blow your wad on one of these guys. The rules have shackled a lot of these athletes on the defensive side of the ball to the point that even the best in the world can/will cost you a game because the rule book is stacked against them. Hell, if that's the way they want it, I'd invest in offensive supremacy and see who can keep up. But 10 Million a year on a guy that MIGHT break on a ball 2-3 times a game? No thanks. As a matter of fact let's line up TO, Moss, and Roy Williams up on one side of the ball and Clements, Samuel, and Hall on the other side of the ball and see which group of players more closely resemble 30 million dollars of worth. The CB #s have gotten ridiculously dumb and it won't stop until the owners start collectively saying "You're just not worth it."
Edit to add: I'm about as flip floppy as I can be on this subject because I would love to find a way to keep Newman, I just don't think that a CB justifies that kind of money. My heart says "Pay Newman and replace Henry cheaper". My head says "A CB just isn't worth the dough". Ugh, I feel like a hooker at a family values meeting.
