Report: Cowboys owner says team talking with Glenn for return

Wide receiver Terry Glenn, still unable to work out with the Dallas Cowboys, appears to be pushing anew for a prompt return with the team, The Dallas Morning News has reported.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told the Dallas newspaper he has held talks with Glenn and his agent, James Gould.

"Terry is someone I have a lot of interest in," Jones told the Dallas newspaper Friday night. "We worked well together last year. We will sit down here and look at how he fits and what we can do with him as a player this year." Glenn, a former wideout for the Patriots and Packers who would be entering his 13th year, failed a physical after last season and still hasn't passed it because of problems with a right knee that was operated on twice last season.

Jones wants Glenn, whose base salary is $1.74 million, to agree to accept a $500,000 injury settlement if he re-injures the knee and can't play this season, but Glenn has refused. As as result, the team has barred him from all preseason workouts.
According to Jones, Glenn was paid $5 million dollars for the 2007 season but was only able to log four plays.

Glenn played in the regular-season finale, but didn't catch any passes. He had two catches in Dallas' only playoff game.
A Cowboys source confirmed to ESPN's Ed Werder on Friday that the team has held internal discussions about possibly acquiring wide receiver Joe Horn from the Atlanta Falcons to line up opposite Terrell Owens.

"I want Jerry to understand that I know he has the ultimate power in everything that goes on with the Cowboys, and I'm not trying to challenge him in any way, shape or form," Glenn told Werder earlier this month. "He can -- and will -- determine the outcome of this because it's ultimately his decision. But what I want is to remain a Cowboy. I've been here for five years and I've made Dallas my home, and I would love nothing more than to be a Dallas Cowboy."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Yeah, If I were you I would love to be a Cowboy too! I mean, 5 million for 4 plays? Sure...!!!

I'm hoping for a quick resolution. Sign the waiver and get on the field. See how the knee holds up (or doesn't) and use that knowledge accordingly.

If it responds well and it looks like he can play - great, the team could use his skills and this is where he wants to be.

If it doesn't, the sooner the team knows, the better and both he and the team can act accordingly.

All around, the sooner the better.

I agree with your sentiments... I say he needs to take the physical and then if he's fine, then him and Jerry need to come to a compromise, and if the knee is questionable, he needs to agree to the terms or Jerry just needs to cut him loose.

I dread the thought of this drama dragging on until training camp... but I think it's much more entertaining than the Pacman drama :)

Personally, I think this team has more than its' fair share of drama.

Any situation they can resolve before the media focus of training camp, the better I like it.

He says he's healthy? Great. Sign the waiver and get out there and show us.

I would have no problem with both sides upping the downside guarantee to $750,000. That would still allow the team to cover themselves and allow Glenn to 'save face' by getting a bit more than was publicly stated. A win-win if you ask me.

Does anyone know how this injury settlement contract works?

Does he still get paid his regular salary up to the time he (hopefully doesn't) re injure his knee?

Does he get any kind of roster bonus and if so does that become pro rated?

If that's the case, I don't see why he wouldn't sign after being in the league 13 years, he has far outlived most NFL careers. Not that that is what this is about, but it does seem reasonable.

They both are taking a real gamble on this season, and I can understand Glenn's reluctance, if his salary is capped at 500,000 total, and I can understand Jones' reluctance to pay for a player that isn't going to perform again.

Appears that TG will be on the field soon, esp now that he's hired an agent and that JJ and TG and TG's agent have had at least 1 serious discussion.

JJ doesn't appear to have soured on TG as of yet.

He never soured... it's all politics. We've spent more money on bigger risks.

This is a classic battle of wills, that's all.

Yeah, 4 plays, 2 surgeries, painful rehab and the risk of permanent impairment so he might play again last season. You know you put your life in the doctor's hands every time you go under the knife. TG got paid well, but let's stop with the it was only for four plays argument. Anyone who believes that should sign a statement that they will refuse workers' comp if they ever get injured on the job. :(

Exactly, very well said.

It's like the argument with all athletes...

People always complain they make hundreds of thousands per game....

Well why do you think they get paid that? Because of advertisers (their image and talent sells products), helping their team win (which sells more advertisements, that sell more products, that make companies TONS of money)

On top of that, all athletes put their health and well being at risk every time they step on the field (even more so in the NFL because it's a full contact sport).

So they are getting paid for a lot more than a few snaps of the ball or a few catches.

ironic this is all happening among this Joe Horn debate
:welcome: to The Zone.

Amazing how a little bit of pressure can change a situation.

She moaned and groaned all last off season for Jerry to pay him some money and what did Jerry get? Four lousy plays...and two catches! Plus, he kept a roster spot open all year long. Now, she's crying AGAIN!

If she's so healthy sign the paper and get on with it...

Oh, and no, I don't feel sorry for athletes that make a gazillion dollars a year to play a sport...they chose to do it, and if they get hurt, oh well...it happens. However, I have no pity whatsoever for someone to get 5 mil and play 4 downs and then come back crying AGAIN! It's not like the guy is living on the streets and is poor, is it?

Either crap or get off the pot...

;)

Talk about not knowing facts.

He was paid his roster bonus in March and it was already in his contract. He got hurt in the summer.

Other than that you're entire reasoning is based on jealousy.

They are the very very scarce resource in a multi billion dollar industry. He is trying to see what the market will bear. Jones is the only one whining in all of this. He is whining over spilled milk and as we all know that is very childish.

They lowballed Glenn and he didn't like it. Do you like being lowballed or do you just take whatever your given and not even think about it?

Yes, I'm jealous and just take what anyone will give me...plus I don't know any facts. I wish I knew everything...like you.

However, I do know...there is not a football player on any team in any league in any country that would not take 5 mil to play 4 downs and catch 2 passes.

Would you take that? Or would you moan and groan for 7 mil and 3 plays and 1 catch?

Wait for abersonc, fuzzy, if your feeling froggy today...maybe you can fight with him!

:laugh2:

He was paid that money 15 months ago. There is no getting it back. Jones is essentially trying to recoup sunk costs which is not how the market works. What you paid 15 months ago has no bearing on the current negotiations.

If he doesn't think Glenn is worth his contract then he needs to just cut him but using a payment from 15 months ago as an excuse to lowball someone is insulting.
