I am hoping for a comeback year for Mo. For whatever reason, he was immature when he got here, and he still was last year. I hope getting hurt and benched and all the negative comments has made him mature a little....maybe he can refocus on football and be a team player this year?

I am not holding my breath though. Gobs of money will allow an immature person to remain immature...

"comeback" would imply he was successful in the past. I just want him to get going from scratch!

There were a couple of years in a row where he didn't give up a TD. @AdamJT13 has some stats on him. The fact that he's still in the league at 36 is a testament to his skill set.

adamjt13 is a defender of scrubs. see: roy williams

Zimmer really likes the guy, even at 36. That says more than any of the opinions I'll read on here.

Zimmer was not a well liked person around here for a long time, I don't know if many people really care what his opinion is lol.

What was that guy's name...

@dbair1967 I think, who really, really really did not like Mike Zimmer back in 04 or so.

That guy used to post a lot, wonder where he went.

He wasn't that bad for us - didn't we go 13-3 with him as our DC? I think our D was pretty solid that year.

EDIT: my bad, that was the year after he left. lol

and you are a romo hater so you are throwing lots of stones in your thin glass house.

I pity you.

Last time: I am not a Romo hater.

I was to hard on Romo in the past and I admit I was largely wrong in many of my criticism's towards him. Even while criticizing him, I always wrestled with is it Romo or is Garrett's playcalling that's the problem. I think the 2014 season proved who the problem was and I was largely wrong about Tony Romo.

I still put the blame on him for us not winning 11 games in 2011 though.

When the average career is 3 years in the not for long league.... Hats off to Mr. Newman for still making a good living all these years later.

Boozeman and SBK92 sure didn't like Zimmer. Are those names allowed around here?

I always thought Zimmer made chicken salad out of bird droppings! Made Mario Edwards into an All Pro from Dr. Zimmer(SI)

Newman's wheels appeared to be coming off in his final game with the Cowboys vs the Giants with the NFC East on the line. He was playing hurt which led to possibly his worst game as a Cowboy. Victor Cruz ran away from him like he was standing still and if that wasn't bad enough Bear Pascoe a TE hurdled him. Didn't think he would still be playing 3 years later.

Yeah, Wade Phillips was head coach/d coordinator in 2007 when the Cowboys went 13-3. Since 1979, no Cowboys team has had a better regular season record than that 2007 team. The 1992 team won 13 regular season games as well.

I was always a big fan of Newman and something of an apologist, but this was the game where I was like...yeah. I've been wrong.

It should be noted that his responsibilities in Cincy after he left here changed dramatically. The Cowboys still were playing players based on their contract, not their ability as of this game.

If you were a big fan of Newman you're not going to like what I have to say. He was probably my least favorite Cowboys player he was never the playmaker he was billed to be coming out of college. Some tried comparing him to Deion and I could never figure out where they came up with that. Newman always played not to get beat giving receivers plenty of cushion allowing them to catch a lot of underneath routes. It took close to 5 seasons before he jumped his first route for a pick-six. He was timed in the 4.3 range coming out of college but never played that fast. I remember early in his career an RB broke free and Newman couldn't close on him but several defenders did. A thread was started on the board after that game questioning Newman's speed.

In 07 vs Buffalo Newman picked off Trent Edwards and was at least 5 yards clear of everyone with nothing but 70 yards of daylight in front of him and he was chased down immediately by Lee Evens who was one of the fastest players in the league but also caught by an RB I believe Anthony Thomas. Newman never got many return yards off his picks in 2010 he had 5 int's but only returned them for 16 yards. It appeared he was more interested in getting out of bounds than trying to get a big return. Most of the int's he got were poorly thrown passes that fluttered to him. Rarely did he make a great int battling a receiver because he played too far off and had terrible ball skills. He dropped some of the easiest int's imaginable even Troy Aikman mentioned during a broadcast how awful his ball skills were after he dropped an int that hit him right in the hands.

Against Denver on Thanksgiving he dropped a poorly thrown Jake Plummer pass that came right to him in which he would have easily scored on securing the win for the Cowboys. That game ended up going to OT where the Cowboys got beat. Don't get me wrong Newman was a solid player but not a great player or an exciting player certainly not the player I thought the Cowboys were getting with the 5th overall pick in 2003. Maybe with some of the Deion talk floating around him on draft day I got my expectations too high for him. Some have taken offense to my opinion of him but I wasn't impressed by his style of play, his lack of playmaking ability or his ball skills. I give him credit that he's still playing at 36 he'll be 37 in Sept I never thought he would last this long. I'm sure him being a 25 year old rookie helped some with his longevity.

I don't mind or really disagree with anything you've said here. Just because I like him doesn't mean I think he ever lived up to being a 5th round pick. He was absolutely a risk averse DB and remains that to this day. his game was centered around keeping the QB from throwing in the direction of his side of the field (which he was generally pretty solid at) but his ball skills were pretty bad.

I think he was plenty fast, but his quickness wasn't all there.

He's had a nice career and been paid very well. There was a time he was a very very good DB, how he is just a smart veteran.
