So just what is the problem between Roy Williams and Tony Romo?

Former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson says it takes time for a wide receiver to develop chemistry with a quarterback.

“Receivers in some ways are a little like a golfer, they get in streaks,” Johnson said. “I remember Michael Irvin’s second year, we had a training camp where he was dropping everything and so it was a matter of us pulling back and saying let’s work on the things that he does well and gradually expand it some of the other routes.”

Johnson talked about former receiver Alvin Harper couldn’t run the same routes as Irvin, who could run any route. The Cowboys at that time worked toward Harper’s strengths which were deep comeback routes and curls.

It seems Williams just isn’t on the same page with Romo and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. The numbers say so.

“Say in your mind, you’re dropping a crossing route, time after time,” Johnson said. “Well, let’s stop throwing the crossing route, because in his mind, he’s saying, ‘Oh no, I’m going to drop it, I’m going to drop it.’ Don’t drop it, don’t drop it. That seeds planted, don’t drop it. Well the seeds planted to don’t drop it, so what do you do? You drop it. And so let’s just pull away from that. Let’s start throwing that comeback where he knows he’s going to catch it, he catches it every time. Catch it, catch it, catch it and then occasionally sprinkle in a crossing route so where he’s had some success to build that confidence back up.”

I have no emotional attachment to Roy Williams. No reputation at stake over "I said he'd be great" or "I said he'd suck". The trade is done for better or worse and so is the new contract.

Whoever we can make the most productive from here on out I am all for it. Roy, Austin, Ogletree, Hurd, Crayton... makes no difference to me.

That said. What Jimmy says above makes total sense. I do believe Roy is better than his production to date in Dallas. I also believe its not lack of effort or courage or whatever. If it takes some relearning, so be it. Baby steps? Fine.

I wonder what color koolaid Jimmy drinks?
funny cause I saw Chris Chambers ball out against the Steelers with his new team. I see a rookie Michael Crabtree in San Francisco doing more than Roy too. both those guys haven't been with their teams for half as long as Roy has been here.

even Jeremy Maclin has more catches, yards and tds than Roy.

3 rookies:

Percy Harvin
Maclin
and Hakeem Nicks have more catches, yards, and more/equal amount of TDs

Hos has clearly lost the Roy battle, now it's the 3 monkeys and snide remarks

I've never said anything pro or con about Roy other than a seldom issued bland comment. I'm all for Roy to do well. I'm more into the Dallas Cowboys doing well.

I don't care what the problem is. He's not catching balls is all I really know for sure. I'm at the stage where I start throwing it elsewhere.

Right now the only good reason to have Roy out there is in hoping he finally busts loose. And the only way to know that is to have him out there. I'm at the let's put someone else in there to throw to until they work this out a little better. Not saying bench him but I'd certainly let him start to sit a little here and there to put different guys out there.

It's getting to crunch time. How long are we going to experiment around hoping for them to get on the same page?

Flame away.

What ur saying is fairly obvious. Yes and Otree should be sprinkled in.

For however long it takes for the Cowboys to get their money's worth.

You don't give someone a huge extension like that and then take a cap hit less than a year later.

People's frustration is understandable, but I think they just need to suck it up and pray that Roy's production increase. Griping about it won't change the fact he's going to be here for awhile.

Strange how every player adapts to a new team at the same pace, isn't it?

There's a lot that goes into it, beyond the dedication and ability of the individuals involved.

Up until the Washington game, we'd seen real progress on the connection between Romo and Williams, but it was muted some by Williams' fumble and losing a ball in the lights. ... But let's discount that because of a game in which Romo was off-target to all of his receivers except in the final minutes.

I think the previous two games show that Dallas is putting together how to best use Williams and he and Romo are getting in sync.
