Tight end Martellus Bennett has a wonderful personality. Sometimes that voice gets him in trouble with the organization, like when he made a rap video last year and used a gay slur when talking about quarterback Tony Romo.

On the field, Bennett came into the 2009 season with high expectations based on his performance in training camp, where he was catching everything.

But his 2009 season fizzled, as he finished with 15 catches for 159 yards and no touchdowns.

In an interview with Ch. 11's Steve Dennis, Bennett said things have to change -- like the Cowboys' offensive system.

"I think I can be one of the all-time greats," Bennett said. "It's part of the system. I think the Cowboys are a great fit for me. The system has to change for me to produce. There’s some things they have to do on the coaching side of the ball to make me ... you got to fit into the system. It's not just all on the player. There’s different things that have to be done to put me in a position to make those plays."

Whether or not you agree with Bennett, the facts are he was getting open at times but Romo didn't get him the ball. A trust factor between Romo and Bennett was part of the issue, and the tight end didn't run the best routes in the world. The organization still believes in Bennett's abilities.

In the last six weeks of the season, however, John Phillips surpassed Bennett on the depth chart. Bennett missed two games with a concussion. Against New Orleans, Phillips caught three passes for 40 yards.

"At one point and time I felt like, man, the season is really stressful because I expected to have a great season this year," Bennett said. "I planned on scoring 10 touchdowns [with] 50-to-60 catches. I don’t feel like I failed. I feel like I got better in other aspects of my game. They asked me to block and I pass blocked."

Jerry Jones had a heart-to-heart talk with Bennett this offseason, mainly to wake him up. Jones is fond of Bennett and his big personality, but the bottom line is making plays on the field, and that didn't happen in 2009.

Here's what Jones said about Bennett at the combine: "I really thought that right at the end of the year that he stepped it up. ... We all look at last year. He is smart guy. He is ambitious. I think we will get some benefit from that. But before it's over with, we will probably have some conversations."

Bennett said he wants to play for the Cowboys long-term, but admitted if things don't go so well, maybe a divorce is in order.

"I think opportunities will come," he said. "Third year, if they don’t, then something is just wrong. Maybe it's not the fit. A lot of marriages will be lucky to last three years now-a-days. And its 2010. You never know."

Interesting......

I agree with Bennett. Being a football player for the Cowboys is just like a marriage. We're lucky we've had Flozell Adams this long.

Oh, and if "they don't." What does that mean? Throw him 120 balls so he can catch 50?

Ditto x 10. He didnt seem to have the problem Bennett did. He made the most out of his oportunities and did more with it. I'm 100% FOR a trade now.

I do too, and he was drafted in the 6th round.

I don't know what our fascination is with tight ends in the 2nd round but it needs to end.

Phillips filled in for Bennett when he was hurt and played a lot of h-back. I don't think Phillips ever passed him on the depth chart.

Seriously.

We already have a 27 year old perenial probowl TE.

TE's that compliment to Witten are pretty simple to find.

Wasting 2 2nd rounders on TE's was a huge fail.

People seem to forget he was hurt for a while! If he is healthy and puts in the work next season. Our passing game improves big time. He is a really good athlete who can really cause problems when he and Witten are both on the field. We should be rooting for him to work out. Not trying to find a way to trade him. What would we get anyway? A 4th or 5th round pick? Not nearly enough compensation for the talent he has.

Talent only goes so far. Dedication is key and so far Bennett hasn't shown enough to warrant getting the ball thrown to him. If we can't get a 2nd or 3rd, keep him and have him block. Someone will come calling, it's a win win situation for Dallas.

Keep him and bench him until he wisens up, or send him to Baltimore where he can play in the AFC North. Come October I bet he'd wish he had the warm dome in Dallas.

He'll be alright. And if he isn't, then the team and he will go separate ways.

Fans get way too emotional about these kinds of things.

Yep. And maybe if they watched the video FIRST without reading others posts, they could probably form their own opinion and know that what he said wasn't all that outlandish.

the problem is that he's playing behind a pro-bowl TE and it seems that in Dallas' system, you don't play a guy over the big contract guy ever and a guy doesn't lose his starting job b/c of injury, etc.

Frankly, best player, regardless of name, contract, whatever, should start.
