Every single team has and will make these kind of mistakes in the draft. Personally, I feel like Jerry has more than usual but we all know how I feel about his draft day debauchery.

Anyway, I do think these can be helpful as far as evaluating the scouts and decision makers. If a scout felt AOA was the better prospect than Kam, why did he think that? What other misjudgments/poor evaluations has he made? Who, if anyone, felt Kam was the better prospect and why were they ignored/overruled. Same deal for Josh Thomas vs Sherman. Good way to evaluate and improve the Front Office, who to listen to more in the future, who to promote, etc.

People overestimate the value of a pick, and underestimate the value of scheme fit and good coaching over a couple of years. That said, it's interesting to see how a few moves (passing on Chancellor/Sherman for Ansah/Thomas) or the move up to pick Claiborne when we might otherwise have stayed put and gone Brokers/Wagner (who knows what really might have happened, but let's pretend) can readily make the difference between a relatively poor defense and a dominating one. That's to say that you can do a ton of things right in building a team in this league, and still the difference between success and failure can come down to just one or two mistakes. Just like in the games. It's kind of crazy how thin the line between real success and failure is in the NFL sometimes when you really think about it.

You're exactly right. Say Dallas takes Chancellor and Sherman.

This same thread would exist right now talking about how Dallas whiffed while Ansah and Thomas were sitting there.
