Any back injury is serious especially for athletes. Tony isnt getting any younger so this type of injury isnt a good long term thing.

No they specifically said it was more serious and then went on to say:

With a compression fracture, the recovery time and determination of return to play is dependent on the nuances of the injury. If the fracture is small and the spinal segment is stable, the recovery can be much quicker than if there is significant bone deformity and associated instability.

So they are admitting they do not know the severity of this particular injury.

None of these so called experts know. I don't know. You don't know. All we can do is play the waiting game and see when or if Tony is ready to come back.

One thing I do know for sure is I would not bet against Tony Romo.

I was away and didn't see the hit until today. Romo is in trouble. He really didn't get hit very hard and if his back can't take that then his body is just starting to fall apart on him.

I personally will be very sad if Romo goes out form injury. If anyone deserved to win its him. But I don't know what a guy can do if something breaks whenever he gets hit somewhat awkwardly.

I think you need to look at it again. He was starting to slide and the guy came down on top of him so that all of the force was on his coccyx bone and then folded him over. And as an orthopedic surgeon said, Romo may be old in football terms but he's not old in human terms. So there is nothing short of a disease that would cause him to have more brittle bones at only 36.

Wrong. Anyone would have had the same injury with that hit.

I hope you and JDSmith are right. It may just be that I don't see a lot of hits like this one so it doesn't look too bad in my eyes (incorrectly).

It definitely doesn't feel like justice for Romo to be out like this...

I think you just made the point they are making - nobody sees a lot of hits like this in football. You are usually tackled head on, at the legs, or from behing while still standing. Seldom does someone get tackled from behind while already going down. That placed a TON of pressure on the spine from two directions - one from the ground and one from the back - it compresses the vertebrate in a way that creates a fracture. There is even a name for it - compression fracture. So while it is common enough for the medical community to have a name for it, the mechanics required to cause it don't happen quite enough in football to be seen commonly.

Most of the medical statements I've heard from doctors have been that this is not an age related injury or anything - it's just what happens when you're hit that way.

I don't know.. I couldn't handle half of what Romo has been through lol ;)
Agreed. Tony has taken a beating during his career. To me, the last hit did not seem so dangerous he fell in an awkward way but its didnt seem that like it should have been so serious.

The ESPN title does not reflect the content.
They said it is indeed a freak accident, that it is not related to past injuries, and that after healing, there should be full normal functionality going forward.

Of course, they also said what we all know; that is 36 and playing in the NFL.
Thanks for the summary.

Yes, but according to the headline it's a scary boo-boo.

You do know that writers rarely write the headlines to their stories or that they are rewritten by editors to grab the most attention. I have little doubt that editors wrote that headline because they know a negative Cowboys related title will get the most attention.

Honestly why don't you try to go in the back yard and start to slide and then imagine the force of 300lbs landing on your back at the moment your butt hits the ground? Just having someone pull out a chair from under you is so painful and compressing on your back, what if they did that and you had 300 additional pounds on you. The force of that combination is incredible!
