ESPN: Why this Tony Romo injury is more serious than past issues

Of course I am no doctor but this could be a minor fracture that will not take long. I say that because Romo had no issues or pain afterwards as was indicated in this article of a more sever fracture. Heck until Romo had the MRI revealing it I think he felt he was fine and ready to go. In the end it will be up to the medical people to make the call and to clear him.

Mickey said they did on the podcast. He said the fracture was too small and didn't show up.

Okay. I had heard that they decided not to do one after he showed good mobility and everything on the sideline after the hit, and when he woke up on Friday he didn't feel right so they did the MRI.

I just harken back to the 90s and before. How many players played with compression fractures in their back? Troy Aikman played multiple games with concussions with no time away. Gayle Sayers played years with a torn ACL. Jack Youngblood played an entire Super Bowl with a broken leg. Ronnie Lott had his finger cut off so he could play sooner. Guys played all the time with all sorts of injuries. Recently, Romo played with a punctured lung.

I'm not saying they should. I'm just saying they did.
And a lot of them are paying for it now. 20 years from now we'll probably find out it was a bad idea just like playing with concussions.

Not Tony's variety of the fracture.

Those comments apply to a complete vertebral fracture, not a slight compression of the superior endplate.

The earlier predictions of 6-10 week recovery apply to the more serious version also.

thats not what the doc said on 105.3 the fan but this could have been before they had more info.

The Dr on Sirius yesterday?
I heard him say if the fracture wasn't completely healed before it took further trauma the chance for a spinal cord injury was increased. Once it is healed that increased chance goes away.

yup exactly sounds like what i heard. why are docs giving contradictory statements on this?

I'm of the opinion that Romo is likely lobbying HARD for them to let him play, but the doctors won't allow it until the MRI comes back all healed.

You could be right. In the end I think what the Docs feel is the right thing and is what the organization needs to go by. I understand how competitive Romo is and I can honestly say I don't think it has anything to do with money just his love of the game and his desire to compete but Docs have to do what is best for the players safety.

This injury is more concerning because of his age and it's the 3rd different back injury he's had since 2013. He's had back surgery and to have another back injury leads me to believe based on his age and injury history the past 4 years this is the beginning of the end for him. I'll be surprised if he's still the Cowboys QB entering the 2018 season. When you see an aging QB battling injuries every year that's keeping them on the sidelines in street clothes that's a sign their career is coming to an end.

Agree 100%. I want Romo back as soon as possible, but only once the doctors have said no further risk to his nerves/spine from this injuyr.

We may have seen the last of Romo. If the season is in the toilet by the time he's ready to return he won't be playing and after talking with his family after the season he might decide to call it quits. If Dak plays good and leads the team to the playoffs that could be a reason for the team to move on from Romo. There's scenarios where we may never see Romo play again. Injuries ended Staubach and Aikman's career.

Why 20 years from now? They're everywhere already. Some came out of it fine. Others didn't.

Kind of like anything else. Old people by the hundreds of thousands have dementia, and they never played a down in the NFL.

Some people smoke and get cancer and some people smoke and don't. It's just the way it is.

I didn't need the author Stephania Bell to figure out things like this sentence:

Beyond the pain resolution and the bone healing, there is also the matter of him being football-ready in his conditioning before he takes the field again.
...and speed of the game...remember Miami last year...and the San Fran opener.
