Everyone is writing Randy Gregory off. I'm not

I get it. He was seemed genuinely sorry for his draft mistake and said all the right things to make us believe that he was going to put the doobies down and focus on becoming a dominate football player. And instead, the dude burns us and fails a few drug tests. It's irritating and ticks me off too. Especially after he said it wouldn't happen again. So I understand why people are writing him off.

But if he can lay off the chronic after he comes back, he could be a difference maker for this defense. There's a reason why he was a top 5 talent in his draft class. He's a special talent. He flashed it last preseason and before his injury last year. And he has a year under his belt now.

I think he will be a force when he comes back. He and Lawrence both. Add Collins, Thornton, Mayowa, Tapper and a healthy Crawford to those two, and I think our pass rush will be better than what people expect.

I am not writing him off, but my patience runs thin with things like this talent doesn't get you any further if you can't get in line with the rest of the league with these banned substances

I'm pretty sure outside of the few extremists on this forum most of us just realize he's not trustworthy. He's got to play games and you can't alter your strategy in a draft because you have a position set in stone now. Because he's untrustworthy we have to treat him as if he could be gone all year and if he's there then ok.

I don't think that anyone is writing him off, he just can't be depended on long-term.

Good post and I agree - but the fact you used the word "chronic" brought a wistful smile to my face because it brought me back to one of my favorite raps of all time and a line in it.

I'm not writing him off, but he really will need to get himself together. He's officially on the bubble now, so if he wants to have a job in Dallas and play, he'll need to fix himself. Charles Tapper is going to be pretty good.

I dont think you can write any player off with as much talent as Gregory especially in his 2nd year. Maybe this suspension is his wakeup call that football can be taken away very quickly. With that said many are forgetting he needs to add significant weight to really be a difference maker and every down player. What we saw last year in limited time was speed rush moves, but often times he got swallowed by bigger players as soon as nagging injuries limited that speed.

I'm not worried about him. He's going to surge this 4 games and kill it. What he does in the offseason is a concern but either way next season we will know what we need to draft of Geegory can't go.

Haha you're welcome, my man. I bet we are about the same age, cause that's why I know that word too-- early 90's hip hop. :)

I feel for the guy because I think his problems are health-related more than they are dependency or stupidity-related. But I also think that at the rate he blew through his chances, there's little hope he'll turn it around for a football career.

it's a shame, too, because he looked like a genuine force in training camp. He could have been a great player, maybe.

If he's taking a roster spot you can't "write him off".

Now that one potential negative influence is off that team that will help.

He's probably the best pure pass-rusher on the team and the need is for him to get past his "crutch" and take the next step on the field.

There was talk about Gregory during "The Ticket's" draft coverage...

They said "it" was a combination of:

1. Getting hurt the first game of the season and being on the sidelines for so long.
2. When he was finally healthy enough to play he didn't get much in the way of snaps.
3. Greg Hardy.

I dislike using the term "mentally fragile" but I think it's an apt description. I think the kid has a tough time handling set-backs and he's easily led astray.

I'm not ready to write him off but he's gotta pull his head out from you know where.

Serious problem if you can't count on a guy in that crucial of a position.

But if he can lay off the chronic after he comes back...

Very few believe that he doesn't have the talent to dominate in the NFL. It is your statement above in which they have very little faith. He's already proven he can't stay off it knowing he would be tested regularly. He's a millionaire now and he doesn't care about working hard or fulfilling a contract. The Cowboys program obviously is not working.

I give his chance of turning his current downward trajectory into a solid NFL career at 10%.

Big "IF", he's failed four drug tests since the combine, he'll be lucky to play a full year without being suspended again, only longer, he talked a good game after being drafted but he's a chronic user and will always be a chronic user

Health related how?

He has a drug addiction..at least the was the word prior to him being drafted, and nothing has happened to change that view

It's only rumored, but I believe it based off of the way the team has handled his setbacks.
