I think Jerry Jones is the absolute best owner in the NFL. I do think he has made a lot of mistakes as GM since as far as the drafts in 1994 although we did draft Larry Allen in the 2nd round. For many years our drafts were absolutely atrocious and directly lead to the serious decline of our Cowboys which noticeably begin in 1997.

We did occasionally get a good player here and there (Greg Ellis, Dat Nguyen, Flozel Adams & one or 2 others) but nowhere near enough and those coaches he hired didn't help. With the arrival of Parcells our drafts significantly improved particularly when Ireland took over as head of scouting. It was noticeable we also become much more successful in the later rounds, undrafted free agent signings & the FAs we had to sign to make up for all those poor drafting years.

The way I see it is that Jerry just doesn't have the eye for talent that he thinks he does. Real GMs like those with the Colts (Polian), Pioto of the Patriots, Smith of the Chargers, etc. I don't doubt for a second that Jerry is trying as hard as he can to be that kind of GM. Also no doubt in my mind that Jerry loves the Cowboys and would do everything he can (unlike so many owners) to win more SBs.

Agree that only an owner like Jerry would bring in TO (although Denver was also in the running but unwilling put out the kind of money Jerry did) even though I'm not sure Parcells was in favor of it. But then not all of Parcells decisions was right on either & his style of coaching might have hindered the team from taking the next step but all that remains to be determined. I do believe that w/o the TO signing we would not have the quality offense we do today. But then again w/o Romo who Sean Peyton brought in but Parcells kept around, we wouldn't be as good either. I was surprised when Parcells decided not to come back but may it's for the best cause he had nothing left to give this team but did leave a firm foundation.

There's no doubt in my mind that Jerry would not have signed Tank Johnson unless Wade Phillips expressed concern about our DL -- not sure if it is the NT position and/or DE as well. It's a gamble but Jerry sure has ensured it won't hurt the Cowboys financially. Admittedly I don't like the problems he brings with him, but hopefully he's not so dumb or unable/unwilling to change and will grasp the brass ring Jerry is offering him back to the NFL. And reality is if we hadn't sign him somebody else would have.

BTW: Don't think for a minute that the Pats signing of Randy Moss wasn't based on the success the Cowboys have had with TO.

I agree with a majority of this post. Many posters to pile on Jerry Jones for bad decisions, but do not want to give him credit for the good decisions that are made.

I agree. Some refuse to give Jerry credit. Example Tony Romo, to some that was all Peyton's doing? Last time I check Peyton could not sign anyone to the team or extend the players contract there is only 1 in the organization who can do that and his name is Jerry Jones.

Jerry made alot worse picks then Quincy Carter......even the Genius Bill Parcells picked duds in the second rd......who btw...never even saw the playing field :)

Quinthy should've never seen the field, the way he threw a kickoff type pass when he got here! But you've gotta admit that Genius Bill Parcells with his dud picks and all was still light years ahead of what Jethro:eek:: was doing!

...need to realize that bringing in the TOs and Tanks would never happen in that case. GMs whose jobs are on the line are much less likely to take risks like these. JJ has no fear of losing his job as the GM so he willing to go out on the limb and take the risk. I, for one, am happy about this. I also like that JJ has seemed to go about these situations extremely smart and carefully. It seems the team always has an easy out if things go bad. I know he has made many mistakes in the past as GM but they seem to be getting less and less frequent since Jeff Ireland arrived. I dread the day that guy leaves for a GM job somewhere else.

A real GM still answers to his boss, the owner....if not, he's not a GM very long. Owners still step in from time to time with just about any GM.

The days of old, rich owners sitting in the background and watching their teams play without any input starting phasing out when the teams actually became a valuable commodity instead of just a toy.

ESPN.com news services

Two days after last December's raid, Willie B. Posey, Johnson's bodyguard, was shot and killed in an early morning fight while he and Johnson were at a Chicago nightclub.

You really think Tank had nothing to do with the fight? Stupid.

You're real classy. You think Tank wanted to get his BEST FRIEND killed? The guy got into a fight with a complete idiot gang banger and got shot. Maybe Tank and his body guard shouldn't have been rowdy like they were, but let's have a heart. Nobody and I mean NOBODY wants to see there best friend or anybody get shot. END OF STORY.

johnson was in a club and a guy bumped into him the two exchanged words and Posey intervened at which point the guy pulled his piece and shot Posey. Its cute that you have no knowledge of the specifics of the incident yet you make assumptions that are blatantly wrong.

johnson was never involved in any fight and the Posey was just trying to get the man away from johnson when he was shot.

Fuzz, you make it sound so routine, so matter of fact. It was a bump and then gunfire errupted. Happens all the time......
