I remember when he was first arrested it wasn't reported that he was just buying some drugs for personal use and instead was basically a drug lord. Tim Allen got a life sentence for cocaine trafficking (he snitched and got off and became the comedian we know today) so in that sense Sam got off light.

He didn’t go to jail for just buying cocaine. He was trying to build an entire empire of selling it The complaint alleged Hurd had negotiated to pay $25,000 per kilogram of cocaine, and another $450 per pound of marijuana.
