Hoping he can use his freakish range and jumping ability to be like MD 26 back in the 80's.

Just hoping he can tackle half as good as Michael..

Having Orlando back and moving Byron to FS might just make our secondary fun to watch this year.

I remember Michael being such a great FS for us during my teenage years. He was the ringleader of Thurman's Thieves in my opinion.

You bring up a good point that's being overlooked. You and BleuStar are probably the only ones that's bringing it up... Orlando Scandrick. #32 will be the main key in our secondary. Possibly our best defensive player. When he's healthy and confident, everyone else is that much better. He's the leader on this D.

Now bring in our second year stud, Byron Jones. I think this kid will be one of the better draft picks the Cowboys will have ever made when it's all said and done. Just my opinion.

Year two will be interesting. But with O-Scan piloting the plane, Jones will be that much better at safety. For every one else, go ahead and count the defense out. It's goooood to be the underdog.

So jumping higher than most receivers doesnt make a difference?!?
No. Neither does running faster than most receivers. This ain't the olympics man, wake up. Football is about awareness, instincts. It's about positioning and timing and leverage. You act like Byron is coming off a season where he was floating around the field like Spiderman picking off 50 passes or something. His vertical didn't do **** for him last year. This is football. Whether he's got a 30, 35, 40 or 45 inch vertical makes no difference. Just like it doesn't make a difference for all the other elite safeties. Nobody just stands at one spot for 5 second trying to jump as high as possible like they do at the combine. You play football, your instincts take over once you're on the field. You run full speed and then you take off if you're trying to bat away a pass or pick a pass off. That has nothing to do with what they do at the combine! You take off just a split second too early/too late you lose all your leverage, your timing is off you'll lose that battle all day vs receivers. That's what counts, not your vertical. Just like your 40 yard dash doesn't make a difference. Nobody just runs a straight line for 40 yards. And nobody runs the way they do at the combine when they're on the field. Even if you're gonna argue that they still do, the difference between a 4.3 and a 4.8 over 40 yards is nothing compared to the time you lose by making a wrong step when you backpedal, by thinking a split second too long while reading the play and so on. Now imagine somebody thinking a bit longer than that, making several wrong steps. That's what football boils down to. Not 40 yard dash or vertical or bench presses. All that stuff is artificial, meaningless, a waste of time. The combine needs to be shut down. Too many great careers have been ruined, too many workout warriors have gotten shots they didn't deserve in the first place. You could eliminate so many busts if you just stopped having these dumb combines. But it makes the NFL money so they're gonna keep this up until the players do something about it.

Jones at FS can help in many ways. As been said many times. I know I say it often.
Jones as a true FS, allows Church and Wilcox to play a true SS. This was the plan from the beginning if Mo came about from his injury and was able to be a decent CB.
I know many hate Wilcox. But I am willing to see what he and Church can do as true SS now.

This also allows Carr and Claiborne do their jobs better. And if all that allows the DL an extra second or two. Thety can get a better pass rush, and possibly even more sacks. In which with better DT play, stopping the run better, allows the LB's to do their jobs better.

I am not saying the success of the defense all lays upon Byron Jones. But it sure can make a difference.

Definitely feel ya there but the only gripe is Carr/Claiborne are man corners and Marinelli loves zone, which won't be a problem for Jones/Scandrick, but doubt the other two have the range (maybe Wilcox) to play zone even @ SS. Well they would still be the weak spot outside of Carr mostly unless the pass rush does develop to mid tier level when Lawrence and Gregory along with an improved inside push w/Crawford/Thornton and Irving/Collins rotating; w/Irving hopefully starting @ LE.

It would really be a great time for Crawford to step up and shoot those gaps as a healthy 3 tech to assist (start getting there!:D) w/the lack of proven DEs outside (Gregory/Mayowa/rooks) and Lawrence early. I like him as a player (Crawford) and love that Collins' rookie contract is up when Crawford's contract is also up (good planning by FO if they don't restructure every off season, etc.).

Not having Scandrick was a huge loss for us last year..in the long run it would of not mattered anyway due to us not having a backup qb or coaches who could gameplan a single damn thing.But..yes sir having a healthy Romo,Scandrick and letting Byron use his athletic ability is surely to help.

On a side note..our defense kept us is so many damn games last year only to be tongue dropped by the 4th quarter by our pathetic offensive production it was pathetic....that will not happen this year.the opposing defenses are going to be the ones exhausted by the mid third quarter...not ours.

Don't worry - Byron will be hated on by Cowboys fans soon enough when he doesn't have 20 INTs a year and lead the team in tackles.

Great assessment! Agree completely.
