Extension For Mike?

Contrary to popular believe Jerry hates firing coaches. After this season Mike will effectively be a lame duck coach with one year remaining on his deal. The logical thinking was that to get an extension you had to wait until the playoffs and see what happens then.

This is Jerry we are talking about. Don't rule out an extension in the regular season. A win against 49ers in week 5 and I could see it happening.

Jerry would be a fool not to resign Coach Mike McCarthy for more years as the Cowboys head coach. McCarthy did it Jerry's way the first 3 years in Dallas by allowing Kellen Moore to be playcaller/O-Coordinator. After 2 weeks of Coach McCarthy's new Texas Coast Offense in 2023, it's clear as day Jerry was wrong to neglect Mike McCarthy to be playcaller and install his advanced version of the West Coast Offense. The Texas Coast Offense is awesome and likely the missing ingredient needed to help our Offense help our Defense make long and deep runs into the playoffs.

The team has looked impressive, but it has only been 2 games so far, so it is way to early to be thinking about an extension for McCarthy.

There is also the question of how much is Dan Quinn and his defense helping McCarthy look good.

It would be fair to argue that with McCarthy publicly saying the offense is playing to the team's strength, which is the defense, he is publicly admitting that Dan Quinn's side (defense) is more important than McCarthy's side (offense).

Of course that is not in any way dismissing the "administrative" role McCarthy provides, and two 12-5 back-to-back seasons including one missing Prescott for several games validates that.

What it does though is show why there is no rush to extend McCarthy at this time.

Quinn is a massive part of the success in Dallas. He certainly appears happy in Big D and he and MM are a great team… but you have to wonder if he is looking to captain his own ship again?

Is MM more important than Quinn? It is tough because MM deserves a TON of credit, but the impact of losing Quinn will potentially set this team back quite a bit.

I would love to see them promote DQ to Asst HC/DC and give both guys an extension and similar pay and contract lengths and try and keep them both in their sweet spot for as long as possible.

Unrealistic as likely DQ leaves in the offseason— but I can dream lol

Mike McCarthy is doing a great job so far but there's a long way to go before the 2023 season is history. I think he'll be extended but it's early yet. Anything asked or declared at this point in time concerning an extension is grossly premature. So far so good with 2 games completed, though.

Pay DQ HC money, make him assistant HC and I think he stays. He seems to have a real passion for coaching the defense, this defense with MP in particular. I think as long as the money is right, and this defense continues to dominate, he stays. Now if the offense doesn't hold up on their end of a SB run, again, and there is a hint of DQ leaving, I think Jerry hits the eject button on MM and makes DQ HC.

My point is that most people would wait. there is no rush. But I wouldn't be surprised if Mike and his agent start asking as his stock is the highest it's ever been right now. With Jerry, he likes to feel comfortable with his head coach (yes, winning comes second). I think he is very comfortable with Mike

DQ probably being paid HC money right now or very close.

Mike McCarthy has a head coaching record of 157 - 97 - 2 with a Super Bowl title.

Dan Quinn has a head coaching record of 43 - 42 with no Super Bowl titles.

Clearly, Mike McCarthy has proven he is very good being a head coach.

Dan Quinn has proven he is very good being a defensive coordinator.

I just want to give a big thanks to the New York Jets management, because if not for them, Mike McCarthy would not be the Head coach in Dallas.......Three years ago when McCarthy was available, I said at the time the New York Jets would be stupid not to hire him when they were in the market for a head coach but as usual since they're the Jets, they went and hired Adam Gase.....To borrow the words of WFAN's radio host and Jets fan Joe Benigno, what a disaster!!!

There were lots of fans on this forum that didn't like or want McCarthy when he was hired, but I think they've slowly come around to a guy that has his philosphy and fingerprints all over this team.....

Totally agree.

Sadly, there are still many here who don't appreciate or realize the value of having Mike McCarthy as not only head coach but finally now offensive playcaller as well.

If it wasn't for Quinn, McCarthy would be fired by now, so let's relax and see if McCarthy can keep this offense going throughout the season. He has prime weapons and solid blocking, all he needs to do is keep defenses guessing. We will absolutely need to go down field more, we tried and had less than epic results.
That said, MM has presented a disciplined unit which is half the battle and more than I expected. Hopefully he'll carry on, but not ready for extension talk until seasons end.
Ditto for QB.

Exactly, and we now have all 3 phases looking like a well oiled machine.

I’m not necessarily disagreeing that Jerry should or will do this, but I find it funny that there was a thread on here a while back saying that week 1 was a must win and if we lose our first game Mike could be fired and now after two games he is getting an extension.

When they made the hire, there was a thread on here asking what we would consider a successfully 5 years for Mike. I wanted to see this team elevated to level like Pitt or GB when he was there that is really in the mix every year, maybe 2 championship games and a superbowl. I honestly look at year one as a wash between Dak getting hurt and the pandemic preseason, that year had no chance. His biggest mistake was not taking the play calling from day 1. this team is not the inconsistent yoyo it was inder garrett. I would be happy to see him get an extension.

Quinn is a great DC. I would rather have McCarthy as HC even it meant losing Quinn.

All the people asking Jerry to give Mike a new contract now will be the same people melting down this message board telling Jerry to fire him immediately and that he was stupid for giving him a new contract if for some reason we don't win the super bowl. Just stop.
