This isn't necessarily directed at you, but how do people not understand the concept of the "fair weather" fan?

It seems like every year people complain because all of a sudden there's a bunch of people claiming to be fans of the top 2-3 teams in the league.

*NEWSFLASH*

It's the same story every year. Yes, it can be annoying, but it would be a lot less of an issue if people would just ignore them.

yep. I live in Commerce Texas. I go to school at A&M Commerce, and until today i had never saw 1 person in commerce wearing any kind of saints apparel.

Today i saw 2 different people wearing saints gear.

Both were wearing saints hats, and 1 was wearing a jersey (you could tell they were brand new)

I asked one of them who the saints 1st round draft pick was and he couldnt tell me. (after he had already told me that he has always been a diehard fan)

then i asked him who his backup quarterback was and he couldnt even tell me that.

If there is one thing i can not stand in this world..... it is definately bandwagon fans

People love a winner. Doesn't even annoy me. Maybe a tiny bit of amusement and wonderment but mostly who cares.

It comforts me that people like that never get to really enjoy the good times like us real fans.

I love telling bandwagon Saints fans that they stole the chant from other teams.

I have lived in Tucson for 20+ years. I do know one Saints fan. I have never seen him wear any other sports teams stuff except the University of Arizona. I feel really good for him.

So far I have not seen anyone else wearing Saints stuff but I have promised myself when I do I am going to call them bandwagon fans. If they deny it, there's a few questions they should know the answer to if they are Saints fans.

I'll be shocked if I get even one right answer.

The vast majority of Saint fans are bandwagon fans, the others are just pathetic.

I'll put it this way.. I work at a sports store, we carry every major sport and every team for each sport....

Last year we got one size run of saints shirts. 1 medium, 2 large, 2 xl and 1 XXL. And sold one shirt the entire season.

This year we sold more Saints items than any other team (including Dallas)

We sold more Saints merchandise this year then we did Steelers last year. It's crazy. You'd think the entire state is Saints fans now.

I live in Atlanta btw.

I really hate bandwagon fans, when we rolled the Eagles two weeks in a row and got that playoff win, at school i counted no less than 5 or more Cowboys jerseys, it was pretty bad. Also they looked pretty brand new..I think they bought it the day before :D

Seen people at work today wearing Saints shirts....they never even discussed football, let alone wear a jersey or shirt.

I wore my Cowboys shirt. During the game, and another one today.

I'm in San Angelo Texas. I saw 2 Saints shirts and a Brees jersey. Seriously, what a waste of money for them.

For the sake of brevity, the masculine form in this response will apply to both genders of sex. No disrespect is intended.

*******************************************

I think it makes many here that have been true fans to our team a bit miffed at those that suddenly come out of the woodpile and jump on the bandwagon of the team that's recently won the championship in their collective sport.

But you shouldn't be that surprised about it.

Many studies have been conducted over a period of time regarding the mindset of American people in how they forge allegiances to certain sports teams and it should come as no surprise that the majority of people have time and time again selected the current champion of that particuliar sport. Numbers have varied over the course of years but one thing has always been factually consistent, the more advanced (technologically) media interests expose these collective sports teams to the populace, the higher percentage of "fair weather" fans come onboard. Exposure has always been the key.

Simply speaking, Americans love a winner. This has been something ingrained in all of us since the early days of pre-school, escalating to more higher levels of learning, in particuliar, courses in the areas of history.

Separation between fair weather fans and true fans have a lot to do (and this should be no surprise) with their upbringing in their respective families. Fathers and sons have bonded over the course of years (and generations) by the viewing of a specific sports team. Much like the aspects of Freudianism, the son is eager to please his father as is the father was eager to please his father and so on. This is how the fanship is built up of, oh say, those lovable losers, the Chicago Cubs or the Detroit Lions (as another example of a hard-luck team). Of course this is not always the case as kids can tend to be rebellious in nature and pick the arch-rival of their father's favorite team as an act of independence (or simply as a means to irritate).

But the average fair weather fan will normally not have that particuliar type of exposure growing up and thus will have leeway in deciding which teams they choose to follow. This is not always factual (as there are always exceptions to the rule) but I think that you will find the majority of them have no basis for teams they choose to favor. They will simply revert back to their early days of school when they were taught how America has always been the best and pick their sports team based on that principle. That's why during the 90s, the favorite teams of most fair weathered fans were the Cowboys, Yankees & Lakers. It's like I said earlier, Americans do love their winners.

No foolin'.
