Steve Wyche: Falcons Could Release Michael Vick This Week

While being interviewed on ESPN earlier today, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Steve Wyche stated that Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank could possibly release quarterback Michael Vick by the end of the week.

If this turns out to be true, the Falcons would face some significant salary cap issues. At the very least, they would take a $6 million cap hit this season and a $15 million hit next year. However, paying $21 million to dump Vick may be in their best interest at this point.

It was already reported that Blank planned to lay down the law tomorrow, so now I have to wonder, is this Vick's last day as a Falcon?

Vick is facing various felony charges that stem from his involvement with dog fighting. If convicted, he could face up to six years in prison and $350,000 in fines.

What was the trade between Atlanta and San Diego for Vicks services? It seems that the LT pick was somehow involved.

I agree with you, and I would bet that if they did do something that crazy he would be signed but the end of the day by somebody...

They also got Drew Brees

No they didn't.

Brees was picked with the San Diego pick (1st overall in the 2nd round).

Atlanta took Alge Crumpler with their second rounder that year.

The trade was:
^ a b c San Diego traded their first overall pick to the Atlanta for their first-round choice (5th overall), their third round draft choice (67th overall), their second round pick in 2002 and WR Tim Dwight. "2001 transactions", atlantafalcons.com, Atlanta Falcons. Retrieved on 2007-05-06.

The 67th pick was used on Tay Cody (CB, Fresno State)
The 2nd rounder in '02 was used on Reche Caldwell

I was mentioning that instead of making the mistake in drafting Vick, they instead got Tomlinson and Brees - two great players.

Pointing out how smart they actually were, not who's pick they used to make the moves.

Blank is not your typical mercenary owner. He cares deeply about team image and community relations. If anyone would pull the trigger, despite the short-term harm to the team, it'd be him.

The Commish has shown HUGE stones and now we need an owner to do the same.
