Falcons Release Mike Vick
Posted by Mike Florio on June 12, 2009, 9:50 a.m.

The Atlanta Falcons, unable to find a taker via trade for quarterback Mike Vick, finally have decided to call it quits.

Vick was released by the team on Friday morning.

“We spent a significant amount of time this off-season trying to trade him to another NFL club, and we had some conversations with a few teams, but nothing materialized,” G.M. Thomas Dimitroff said in an interview on the team’s official web site. “At this point, we feel releasing Michael is best for him and best for us. Our entire organization sincerely hopes that Michael will continue to focus his efforts on making positive changes in his life, and we wish him well in that regard.”

And so Vick now becomes an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team.

It’s unlikely, however, that anyone will sign him unless and until he’s reinstated by the league.

UPDATE: As of 10:02 a.m. EDT, ESPN inexplicably continues to report that the Falcons “will release” Vick later this morning, claiming credit for breaking the story of the coming move. Attention, Bristol . . . they’ve already cut him. Moreover, by the time ESPN was “reporting” the news, the Falcons already had announced it.

They'll try to make multiple threads anyway but this helps.

The commish just needs to say no here.

He doesnt belong in the league. Simply say no your not welcome.

Let him go play in the cfl.

If he is the great athlete everyone says then he will win some championships in the cfl and get paid.

There is no reason for him to have the chance to play in the nfl.

Omg!!!!

Go Get Him, Jerryyyyyyy!!!!!!!!

first off, he's suspended by Goodell, so you can't sign him, and two, why would anyone sign him, he's been out of Football for two years and when he was playing, he's not a good QB. The negative press and protests for any organization would be huge, teams would lose local sponsorship and protests would be a weekly, if not daily event at their head offices or stadium..... as bad as it was that Vick did, alot of people are more offended/outraged by the abuse and killing of animals than they are about people...

while what he did was egregious, he did his time for his crime and should be allowed back in the league.

I'm not so sure you will see the public protest your are anticipating should he play for an nfl team. IMO he should be allowed to play if a team is willing to sign him. He has paid the price for what he has done. I agree he has been out for awhile and he was never a great QB but he is a phenomenal athlete. I feel he will find his way back into this league.

Yes, he did his time, but the distraction to whatever team he hooks up with next... it too will be egregious... (nice word btw). We don't need that here. We just got rid of most of the distracting, problem children. We don't need ONE that will be more of a distraction that all the ones we let go put together. No thanks.

i have not totally made up my mind about Vick but i'm not so sure he will be as bad of a disease in the locker room as the ones we released. Vick will bring some unwanted attention from the media but is not as flawed in character as the other players football wise.

I am sick of those saying he made a mistake. He CHOSE to involve himself in a disgusting obscene animal abusive BUSINESS for at least 5 years. That is a pattern of behavior and lack of moral foundation. Hundreds of dogs died brutally and in great pain. Read the indictments and the descriptions of how many of those dogs were killed by Vick and his cronies. Read about the lost pets and dog pound refugees that were thrown into fighting pits to "train"
the fighting dogs. Those poor pets and weak dogs were TORN TO PIECES.
FIVE years at least. Weekly and daily.

Agreed.

He made some monumental mistakes and has paid a hug price.

I think he deserves a second chance.

Not saying the Cowboys - or any other team - should sign him but I think he should have the opportunity to attempt to straighten his life out.

He's paid his dues and I personally wouldn't hammer a team that signed him.

People can realize the error of their ways without being spurned from society.

I agree, once he has paid his debt, he should be allowed to continue his football career.

Some of the negative responses are indicative of how the public will react. He may be happier playing in the CFL for a couple of years and let this cool off as much as it can.
