Exactly. As you said, Jerry has the chance to sign Dak, Lamb, and Micah early to save the team salary cap dollars and he defiantly choose to wait and set the market.

Idk, Coogs. It seems to me like there was a preliminary agreement in place, and the agent got butthurt that he wasn't involved, leading to a standoff between the agent and Jones. If a preliminary offer was made and agreed on, the agent's job is to advise his client and draft a counter offer to send to the front office. From what I'm gathering, the agent has made no attempt to contact JJ with a counter, under the premise that no initial offer has been extended, which has been proven false by Micah himself.

My guess is the deal was rich in guaranteed money, but much longer term than the agent would want to agree to. The agent got in Micah's head, telling him the old man is trying to steal money, despite the fact that Micah himself has said repeatedly that he wanted a contract that would give the team flexibility to retain talent. Now Micah is pissed that Jerry hasn't put in the effort, when the reality is the framework of the deal had been discussed and shook on, and the agent didn't like the framework. I'm generally good with bashing the front office for sucking, but the longer this drags out, the more clear it becomes that Micah's agent is screwing this up, and making Micah look like an idiot in the process.

Here’s the clear and most important distinction: Yes, a player can choose to negotiate his own deal without an agent. BUT…if the player chooses to be represented by an NFLPA certified agent, the team must go through the agent to make official negotiations. (Negotiations official)

Micah has chosen to be represented by his agent David Mulugheta. That’s who the team is now supposed to negotiate Micah’s contract.

The hang up seems to be the interpretation of acting on your own behalf piece v. using an approved agent. This is not an all or nothing situation. A player doesn’t have to decide to either represent themselves 100% or relinquish 100% negotiating control to their agent.

If you choose to act on your own behalf, an agreement can be reached and a valid contract signed with no agent involvement whatsoever. You acted as your own agent.

If you choose to use an agent, they must be vetted and approved and any agreement reached and contract signed must involve the agent. To sign without an agents involvement would be invalid and a violation of the CBA.

Most players using agents let the agent do the work. But that doesn’t mean they forfeit their right to negotiate their own interests without their agents presence. The degree and manner of involvement the player chooses is between the player and agent. You can’t remove the right to be involved from the player.

Jerry knows this isn’t binding or legal per the CBA without the agents approval.

Frankly, everyone in this thread saying its wrong to discuss a contract with a player sounds dumb. Micah had a conversation with Jerry about his contract. They came to a preliminary agreement by all accounts. Now Micah is reneging because his agent told him to because his agent wants to get a bigger cut.

I dont have time to read through the whole cba, but its hard to find apecific provisions about player and agent negotiations. The agent has to sign his name on the contract, he doesn't have to be present for the negotiations. It's clear you have not put in any actual thought to this post, seeing how Jerry had negotiated this way with every major contract.

The League and the NFLPA must both approve all players’ contracts. They are otherwise not valid. That has nothing to do with Jones, Parsons, or Mulugheta. None of them can circumvent the CBA.

Yeah and you'd figure the people working for you would take orders from you, not the other way around.
