While it is hard to watch(put me to sleep the first 2x lol)... you cannot deny its significance. It was ahead of its time and had much foresight. Therefore anyone who kills you for it just doesnt "get it".

Kubrick movies are slow in general, but I like that - I'm in no rush :).
Most people when they talk of Sci-Fi talk about Star Wars and they just don't like 2001. I hear it all the time.

Anti-hero epic: Cool Hand Luke (1967)

For those who haven't seen this one, it is genius. Seriously, this one is so deep that modern day philosophers write about it. You can get a lot out of this movie. It is flat out entertaining if you want that and it is incredibly deep if you want that.

I think I'd have to rethink my list with that one. Funniest movie I ever saw; can't imagine how I forgot it when making my list, I watch at least once every couple of months.

As a teenager "A Clockwork Orange" really opened my eyes to two things:

1) how amazing Kubrick was as a director

2) how short a movie falls, no matter how well it's made, when compared to the literary work it's based on

1) He sure was. I saw ACO and The Shining around the same time on cable as a kid and I was floored. My whole outlook on movies was forever changed.

2) I read the book often and while I'm amazed at how close it is in some ways - some of the exact lines of dialogue are used - I agree that film is still not a perfect compliment to literature.

Some things can't be translated onto the screen as well as just being laid out in type without someone else's input to affect your perception. Reading is the most natural way to absorb a story completely and personally.

Have you read any other Burgess works? The guy is definitely one of my top favorites.

I started to read "Man of Nazareth" when I was on leave at the folks house around the mid-eighties - when my dad literally stole it from me (he said borrowed) and I never got it back.

If you can recommend anything approaching his work in "... Orange" I will be sure to Amazon it next time.

Since we have had a couple of different threads on movies lately, I thought I would ask what are some of your favorite movies in the different movie genres.

My favorites:

Sci-Fi: Star Wars

Action/Adventure: The Indiana Jones movies

Western: El Dorado

War: The Longest Day

Comedy: Animal House and Airplane! (Love watching both equally)

Drama: The Presidio

Horror: Don't care for the genre. Never found a movie that was any good.

That is all I can think of right now. If I forgot any genre(s) please add it to the list. Thanks.

The Wanderers &
The Warriors

Saw both at a twin bill at the drive in in Huntsville Tx. back in the day.

I love The Wanting Seed and Tremor Of Intent.

A Meeting in Valladolid from The Devil's Mode and Other Stories is great. The way he depicts Shakespeare killed me. I read that short when I was still in high school and can't attest for the rest in that volume because I just never got to them. Yet. :)
