A Meeting in Valladolid from The Devil's Mode and Other Stories is great. The way he depicts Shakespeare killed me. I read that short when I was still in high school and can't attest for the rest in that volume because I just never got to them. Yet.
Hey, you shook loose a memory for me! (I may well be an Alzheimer's candidate - looks like more exercise and a reduced fat diet is in the cards for Suspect...) I read "The Devil's Mode" back in the early 90's. Awesome Burgess look at historical and literary figures like Atla and Cervantes. It read like a compilation of short stories and really brought them to life. Blazed thru cuz I just couldn't put it down.
I'll take your advice and check out "The Wanting Seed" and/or "Tremor of Intent".
