Corvette's and Mustangs should be banned from this discussion. Because their both a given and a "default" muscle car.

That said, the Oldsmobile 442's of the early to mid 70's were "all that" when it comes to muscle cars.

My freind in HS had a 71 Barracuda that was impressive as well. My first car was a 1971 Buick Riviera. The first year with the ducks-*** back. A muscle car? Depends upon the observer. But, to me, it was a HUGE Corvette. A 455 four barrel that got about 12 miles a gallon. It was a pretty slick ride for a 16 year old.

Kind of lame at the outset, but became very nice looking after a few years.

Because of my love of muscle cars, I have sincerely longed to have lived in the 60's. Fortunately, my dad did and, except for Vietnam, experience what every car-lover would cherish.

Taking a day to look for a muscle car, imagine your choices:

-Camaro
-Mustang
-Chevelle
-Chevy II (Nova)
-'Cuda
-Challenger
-Charger
-Firebird/TA (love those T/A's)
-GTO

I'll have some pics of my '67 Camaro's new paint job very soon. Possibly tomorrow.

I wish I could accumulate the cost to buy a '08 Honda Civic

and go back in time to the '60s

I'm telling ya', this was one hot ride. It was a 4 speed clutch too. I know AMC gets a lot of guff for it's goofy cars, but the Javlin was pretty cool.

Lots of good choices in here, here's a list of some others that haven't been mentioned:

1970 Buick GSX, with the Stage 1 455 engine... the yellow one...

1969 ZL1 Camaro, with the aluminum 427...

1970 SS454 Chevelle, with the LS6 454... preferably the convertible... it and the Hemi 'Cuda were the two fastest production cars back then...

I also like the Dodge version of the Superbird already mentioned, the Charger Daytona with the 440 6 Pack... and the Hemi Challenger, with the dual quad option...

So many wonderful cars were put out back then... I think it all started with the 1957 Bel Air convertible, with the dual quad 283 or the fuel injected version...

I guess somebody ought to mention the 1967 or 1968 Z-28 Camaros too, with the DZ302 engine (but they were only available in 4 speed versions, and I prefer a well-built automatic)...

1967 Camaro

04.jpg

My first car was a 67 Camaro, got it when I got my license in 1970... it was white, with the same red interior that one has... it wasn't sexy, a 327 2 barrel with a Powerglide auto, but I ran that sucker HARD...

Some years later I had the chance to buy another 67, that was in the process of being restored... it was an original SS350, which was the hottest engine the Camaro offered at first (the 396 was a midyear addition to the lineup)... it had the 4 bolt mains, big valve heads, and the TH-350 auto (the SS350 was the only 67 auto that did not have the Powerglide)... it also had the 3.55 Posi rear, which offered a nice compromise between streetability and acceleration... it had the black deluxe interior (center console and highback buckets, which became standard in 1968)... I had it painted in what I think they called Daytona Yellow, but which I called Bumblebee Yellow, with the black stripe around the nose...

In retrospect, I wish I'd had it painted Hugger Orange... I loved that car, had it for 10 years... this was back when I could afford to own two vehicles, my other was an 80 Jeep Cherokee...
