An NFL club trading two first-round picks straight-up for a wide receiver?

It happened 15 years ago Thursday, when the Cowboys dealt their 2000 and 2001 No. 1 picks to Seattle for Joey Galloway. (A hat tip toProSportsTransactions.com for jogging our memory.)

The trade ended a saga that saw Galloway hold out for half of the 1999 season, his final under contract to Seattle. He returned for the final eight regular-season games, and ultimately, an arbitrator ruled that he had earned an accrued year, thus making an unrestricted free agent. The Seahawks responded by giving him the franchise tag, then allowing Dallas to work out a deal.

The Cowboys were in need of receiving help with Michael Irvin’s NFL future in question because of a neck injury. And indeed, Irvin would retire later in 2000. But Galloway was limited to just one game in his first season with Dallas because of a torn ACL, and he never reached 1,000 yards receiving in three subsequent seasons with the Cowboys.

And the next three years were the darkest in Cowboys history. This team and Jerry Jones have come a long way since then though.

I think not only is this the most willing Jerry has been to listen to the people around him, (20 years with a lack of postseason appearances/success may have something to do with that) it may also be the first time since Jimmy that Jerry has people who are willing to say no.

I remember waking up to the news and being crushed that we lost our 1st round pick the next two years.

As an aside, Galloway might have been the fastest offensive player I've ever seen. I would have loved to have seen him and Deion in a foot race on a go route.

I believe Tim Brown was wanting to sign as a free agent that year also.

Would have been better than Galloway - Tim brown had a couple more Pro Bowl years ahead of him. Then again, can't really fault the Cowboys wanting to go with Galloway who was 5 years younger than Brown and in his prime.

Unfortunate situation all around

In the article, they ask is any WR worth 2 first round picks...as if all 1st round picks are created equal.

Just via a trade value chart alone--which is not the be all, end all..but helps--we know that one top five pick equals as much as 3 very late1st round picks. And every other year, a WR gets taken in the upper end of the draft.
So yes, there are WRs that would be worth, say, the 28th and 29th pick in Rd 1.

I believe this may be the most misunderstood aspect of Jerry and the team in general after the departure of Jimmy.

Jerry spent several years trying to poor boy the replacement of Alvin Harper with a host of players who under achieved, or didn't have the talent. He signed Rocket Ismail, which was the turning point for Jerry in finally getting the point. This is about the player who can execute, and sometimes you have to pay for that privilege.

But as we all know, the previous year Irvin went down. He discovered he had spinal stenosis, which precluded him risking his health and returning to the field.

Jerry saw a need for a receiver. He was jacked by Snyder, who understood Jerry was going to pay the freight for a starter, so he bid enough to cause Jerry to overbid. But the theory Jerry worked under was sound. The team needed a starter across from Rocket.

Jerry's mistake was not recognizing Aikman was on the down hill and his skill set was eroding. If Aikman were the guy who he was a few years before, then this would not have been as bad as it turned out.

Fans blame Galloway. He signed a contract offered by Jerry. Not Galloway's fault. Neither was his knee injury.

Jerry tried to fill a void, but overpaid in regard to the diminishing skills of Aikman. Had Troy been the same as before, this might have been one of the best moves Jerry made. It surely signaled him thinking outside of the cheapo box where he tried to fill in around the playmakers on this team.

It did not work out. Lamenting that fact and assigning blame to Galloway is ridiculous. H took the best offer out there. Jerry made a mistake. I don't fault him for signing Galloway, but I do fault him for letting his big mouth alert the rest of the league he was not only interested, but Hell bent on getting Galloway. Thus being played by Washington, who were not as interested in getting Galloway as they were screwing with Jones.

Other than Deion, this was the most excited I had ever been about a Cowboys player acquisition. Unfortunately it completely bombed and set the Cowboys back for years.

All this is true, but Galloway was a not a complementary receiver to the Rocket. Both were smallish speedsters. If Jerry thought this out better, he would have looked for a WR who was bigger, more physical, possession type WR. While older, Tim Brown would have been a better fit. Or Jerry should have just drafted Randy Moss. Galloway was a bad trade any way you look at it. Jerry's fault not Galloways, think the majority recognize that.

Never said he was complimentary to Rocket. I wanted Brown to come here. But I also remember he wasn't inclined to do so. Even though he was a Cowboy fan as a kid. He stayed in Oakland for the money.

As far as people recognizing this was Jerry and not Joey, I challenge that. There was a great uproar over Galloway and he was cussed, just like Roy W the receiver.

I don't know about that. St Louis in that same era with smallish fast WRs was ripping up the league. Not saying Dallas would've been nearly as explosive as the Greatest Show on Turf, but a healthy Aikman throwing to those 2 speedsters could've been prolific. Also, James McKnight was a pretty good 3rd WR with speed. Unfortunately Galloway shredded his knee in the "pickle juice" game vs Philly. Rocket got injured as well. it just seemed that season was doomed. At some point Chris Brazzell and Damon Hodge were our starting WRs. Nothing worked out....
