Fifteen years ago Thursday, the Cowboys traded two No. 1 picks

After reading this thread, gotta go get me a drink...........I see why Dallas had been in a playoff drought all these years. You can't say Jethro didn't try to get something going......but you could put a chimpanzee in there and he may have done the same as he did.

Fortunately, it appears he's taking advice from others now and put it to good use. That's what separates us from the animal world. :D

I was in a hotel in Cali at the time of this move, and if I'm not mistaken, Derrick Thomas had just passed away as well...
that was a heavy drinking night.

What was the date when Campo was made head coach? That's the date I'll rue...... ( waiting for some Internet genius to make the argument that Campo was really a good head coach).

Two 2nd-round picks for Galloway is a trade I would have supported at the time.......

He was like Wade, good at coaching defense, but perhaps not cut out for the HC role........

To be fair to Campo, the Cowboys had a huge lack of talent, and the Eagles dominated the East.

Randy Moss made scrubs like Matt Cassel, Daunte Culpepper, Randal Cunningham, Brad Johnson and Jeff George look all world. I have no doubt Aikman would have figured out that all he needed to do was throw it high and Randy would go get it. Aikman was smart like that.

Randall Cunningham was no scrub, let's not be disrespectful. For a few years, Culpepper was playing better than any QB in the league as well.

Cunningham was a backup QB when he got to Minny, let's be honest. And Culpepper was a scrub if not for Moss and Carter.

Cunningham wasn't a great QB but he had an elite skill set and was one of the best athletes to ever play the position. He had a very strong arm that could launch a football over 70 yards and he ran like a gazelle. Although he was a very talented player he never put up great passing numbers. He was the first real duel threat QB who could do damage with both his legs and bazooka arm. He had a few games where you thought if he could play like that consistently he could be one of the greatest QB's ever but he wasn't consistent. He only had 3 real solid seasons in 88 and 90 with Philly and in 98 leading Minn to a 15-1 regular season. As for Culpepper he was far from a scrub he was one of the better QB's in the league for 3 seasons until he got injured in 05. He had a great arm and was very mobile for his size.

Culpepper only played with Chris Carter 2 seasons Carter finished out his career in Miami in 02. Culpeppers most productive season was in 04 when he passed for 4717 yards with 39 TD's. He had a completion percentage of 69.2% and a passer rating of 110.9. Moss only caught 49 passes for 767 yards that season. He appeared to be done which is why Minn traded him to Oakland for only a 4th round pick after that season. Culpepper's leading receivers that season were Jermaine Wiggins and Nate Burleson. Culpepper spread the ball around to 14 different receivers that year.

Culpepper went to ZERO pro bowls after Moss traded and was out of Minny year after Moss trade. Again, Cunningham was benched for Peete his last years in Philly, was out of football for a year before signing as a backup by Minny and experienced career resurgence which did not last when he left Minny, for Dallas of all places.

You obviously didn't follow Culpepper's career he went to ZERO pro bowls AFTER he suffered a serious knee injury in 05. His career went down the drain after that. Like I mentioned his most productive season was without Carter and Moss didn't produce much that season. Moss certainly didn't help the Raiders QB situation the 2 years he spent in Oakland did he? Receivers don't make QB's it's the other way around and every great receiver even Randy Moss needed a solid QB to get them the ball. He was a deep ball receiver and it took a good strong armed QB to launch the ball down the field to him.

As for Cunningham he was a great athlete who had 3 very solid seasons. He had the arm to take advantage of Mosses deep speed which is why he had a resurgence in 98 with Minn and Moss had a terrific rookie season. When Cunningham arrived in Dallas he was a declining QB on a declining team. The Cowboys play had declined so much Troy Aikman got booed in favor of Cunningham. No one is saying Cunningham was a great QB but he had a terrific skill set that combined a cannon for an arm with a graceful elusive running style that made him one of the most exciting players in the league.

Wow didn't remember it happening in his first game. Sheesh!

I still remember the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach after that injury. I was on the fence all summer about that trade to begin with. Being an optimist I was like - this will be OK Galloway will light it up and we will score lots of points, you know the usual. It's just hard to concieve how fast things went south. All the wind taken out of the sails after just one game.

I think he had 4 catches for 62 yards and a TD when he got hurt... was headed for a big day.

You know what the worst part of this whole scenario was listening to John Madden commentate on Vikings game and telling stories about talking to Cunningham and Moss about the offense. Something with John Madden quoting Moss telling Cunningham, "Hey Dogg chuck it to me Dogg". That was painful, more painful than Galloway going down, Aikman retiring, Campo as coach, all of Barry Switzer's press conferences. Madden was a greta commentator who did a bad Randy Moss impression.

Still a great reason why you don't "Go all in".

Exactly. It's a team sport, and injuries always play a role. Difficult to put all your salary eggs into just a few baskets.

As soon as we sign one of those Dez or Romo type deals, I almost expect an injury. If the deal prevents us from having quality depth, we're screwed.

Caponomics and talent evaluation are almost as difficult and challenging as the game.

Exactly right.

If there were the NBA, you can do the "all-in" thing. But with 22 starters and the ever present danger of injury... it just doesn't make sense to shoot your wad for one season.

Sweet Jesus jumpers! Looking back at it- Y2K was an utterly miserable year for the Cowboys and their fans!

I'm glad I blocked that year out.
Those were some good times for heavy drinking and drug usage and overall, generally non-harmful insanity.

Who am I kidding? Anytime is.
