Picture this; an ultra-talented, athletic, former second round pick from Texas A&M is drafted to eventually replace a future hall of famer, but he struggled with consistency and never lived up to the insane amount of hype. His inconsistency in practice, ball security and questionable character fit in the locker room eventually lead to his departure from the team, which had such high hopes for him. People i the media were now questioning his talent in the first place and doubted that he would ever become a serviceable player again. However, the talented, yet troubled athlete wound up in one of the most ideal situations for him and his NFL success where he eventually found success and went on to become a pro-bowl player and one of the best players at his position. Almost sounds made up, right?

Could you guess whose story I was telling? Before you say it, no, I wasn’t predicting the future of recently acquired running back in Christine Michael. Instead, I was actually describing the career arc of former Dallas Cowboy tight end Martellus Bennett.

“I didn’t have room to be myself,” Bennett reflected. “They always told me, ‘Do it like Witten. Be like Witten.’ I think they had a guy who played tight end the right way and they wanted me to do it exactly like him. But really if you try to imitate someone else, you can never really be who you are.

Stupid comment by Bennet. Nobody was asking him to be Jason Witten. They were telling him this is how you play the position and model it.

There is a big difference that he probably still does not realize.....

Stupid comment by a poster. You ***ume you know what was told to Bennett, but you really don't, yet you run with your ASSumption. With your ASSumption you throw Bennett under the bus, while he is earning and being recognized as the Bear's MVP. It is easy to ***ume and be wrong. Am I wrong about you (based on your unfounded ASSumption)? Or are you the kind of poster I assume you to be?

Before I scroll down I'm predicting Zoners aren't going to like the compliments about Bennett..

Guy is an awesome TE and just proves that Dallas needs to cut out the drafting of backup TEs in the early rounds.

Jerry wanted Bennett to stay and Bennett made a wise decision to move on.

Being the Bears' MVP is like being the skinniest kid at fat camp.

He's a clown.

He's a great blocker and a redzone threat.

He'd be awesome here with how we like to run and his ability to set the edge.

He stated that he was told to be like Witten, how can you deny this unless you were there? Regardless of how you feel about Bennett, facts are this, he is one of the top five TE in the NFL.

not worth the garbage he drags everywhere with him

What garbage?

What is soooo bad about Martellus? That he's a little immature?

Martellus is overall a good guy and one of the best at his position.

If he didn't work out here then blame the Cowboys coaches because there are far worse characters than a guy that's just happy go lucky.

To me he didn't apply himself while with us, and it took 2 more teams to get to what he is today. Bottom line we drafted the right potential, it just took somewhere other than with us to realize it.

it didn't take two more teams, He left Dallas for more playing time and he left the Giants for more money. The Giants were not unhappy with him. Some of you kill me with your "personal" opinions that are not based on facts.

We used him as a blocker.

Did Fasano, Phillips, and now Escobar not apply themselves either?

Maybe, just maybe, the Cowboys coaches are not good at using multiple TE's.

Agree on his being used as blocker. My " apply comment " is that he didn't round out his whole game. Specifically I recall that early in his career we threw to him several times in the end zone and he didn't deliver. Following that I think Tony was wary of him as a receiving option.

He had a hall of fame progress stopper in front of him with coaches that don't know how to get 2 TE's involved.

Sure he left for more money and playing time. No disagreement. My opinion is that it took longer for him to show his real skills and that happened to occur more prominently 2 teams later with the Bears.
