“I didn’t have room to be myself,” Bennett reflected. “They always told me, ‘Do it like Witten. Be like Witten.’ I think they had a guy who played tight end the right way and they wanted me to do it exactly like him. But really if you try to imitate someone else, you can never really be who you are.

Stupid comment by Bennet. Nobody was asking him to be Jason Witten. They were telling him this is how you play the position and model it.

There is a big difference that he probably still does not realize.....
Stupid comment? He's dead right.

This staff never gave him a chance to be himself.

You're exactly right, BUT........

You gotta consider his age. He's a young dude.

His entire comment reflects that.

Stupid comment by a poster. You ***ume you know what was told to Bennett, but you really don't, yet you run with your ASSumption. With your ASSumption you throw Bennett under the bus, while he is earning and being recognized as the Bear's MVP. It is easy to ***ume and be wrong. Am I wrong about you (based on your unfounded ASSumption)? Or are you the kind of poster I assume you to be?

Well we know the forum people going to be deleting this post but before they do: Bennett was lazy here, and right here in his own words he proved his lackadaisical approach to the Cowboys organization when he played here. A real leader will take responsibility for his own efforts and lack of them. There is no more need to hear anything more damming than his own words right here. If he would of played up to par, he would still be here plain and simple

I think Marty B's problem was practice and habits. That's what took him so long to fulfil his potential. However, if he were still here he would never lived up to it either. Some guys like our own (dez), you can never really teach them to handle fame and fortune like let's say, witten. That's out of the question. If you're an old school fellow these guys aren't going to wow you as a person. What separates dez from martyb is the passion for the game. That's the chance that was so hard to swallow when martyb was up for a new contract.

Compared to cmike i can see the resemblance to Martb's situation. However, from what I've read, cmike's passion resembles more dez. In games and practice and off season he works. Let's hope this change will help him harness his potential. We've done it with dez, looking good with gregory (knock on wood), then you have special cadets like Martyb.

This story is nothing new.

A fairly large percentage of young players are not NFL-ready or mature in their physical, mental, or emotional status. If significant improvement doesn't occur by the end of their first contract, they move on. The players that initially disappoint us the most are the ones who only lack emotional maturity.
But by the time a guy like that is with his second or third team, he's likely to have awaked and matured, allowing him to shine. While fingers may be pointed at the initial team, the same thing would have probably happened with any team the guy first signs with.

If there's a lesson here, it's that emotional immaturity is a significant risk in a young player for the first few years.

oh BS. His idea of being himself in no way included being a professional football player that a team would be able to trust.

What garbage?

What is soooo bad about Martellus? That he's a little immature?

Martellus is overall a good guy and one of the best at his position.

If he didn't work out here then blame the Cowboys coaches because there are far worse characters than a guy that's just happy go lucky.

its always someone elses fault with you isn't it?

What other things are you talking about?

I think Martellus has proven that it was someone else's fault that he wasn't more productive.

No, that is bs. He was quirky and never did anything to hurt the team. Just b/c he was a bit of an oddball, fans of this team villify him.

He's never been arrested, suspended or dealt with any off-field issues. He didn't want to be Jason Witten, so people make up that he's a bad guy.

What about him was not professional? He showed up to every practice. He was never late for meetings. He was always in shape. He's not a leader but he's not a bad lockerroom guy.

So what about him isn't professional? He's a little quirky?

One of JG's biggest flaws is that there is hardly any room on this team for unique personalities. RKG is a very specific thing and guys who don't quite fit that mold are kicked out. The failure to get MB involved and to have him stick around is this coaching staff's greatest shortcoming.

How can any of you comment on Bennett, were you there when he was asked to do things the Witten way? Take the blinders off and realize that maybe the Cowboys had something to do with his progression. I am not a fan a Bennett but we don't know what happened with his situation. Looks to me like he is doing fine in Chicago.

Hard Knocks was there and spun it to make him look like a bad teammate.

This isn't the first time that he's commented about not being Jason Witten.

Talk about off on a tangent. This is supposed to be a discussion about our new running back and can this be greener grass then where he left. It's now all about a TE who has been gone from our team for years who no one should give a flip about. This is like talking about a girl you dated years ago and now you are dating someone else and shouldn't care about the old flame.

You and I are of like mind.

I haven't rued anything since he left and became a pro bowler in Chi town. You win some you lose some. He was just bad for this team. Had we lost Witten and he was doing this maybe my thought would be different.

This was suppose to be about Michael and hopefully this change of scenary will do the same for him as it did Bennett, and Ro, etc!
