On Sunday, Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten became just the third tight end in NFL history to surpass 10,000 receiving yards and he did so on a beautiful 34 yard reception from quarterback Tony Romo. Today, we are going to take a look at how that play happened using the NFL’s All-22 coaches tape.

Down & Distance: 2nd Down & 15 From The DAL 17

The Dallas Cowboys had just been called for holding on a DeMarco Murray run and now they were backed up in their own territory, needing to score after Arian Foster scored a touchdown in the middle of the third quarter for a 7-3 Houston lead. After Murray left the field for a breather, the Cowboys went with a S-01 package (Shotgun, 0 running backs, 1 tight end and 4 wide receivers) to spread the Texans out, hoping to get a favorable matchup. And that’s exactly what happened.

Pre-Snap

When Tony Romo and the Cowboys broke the huddle, the first thing Romo noticed was that there was only one safety in the deep portion of the field. To him, this indicated that he will have single coverage on almost every receiver as the lone safety will either be covering the deep middle of the field, or will shade to Dez Bryant on the outside. Where that safety moves at the snap of the ball will determine where Romo goes with the ball.

Man, the All-22 film makes for some better analysis during the week in between games. Good stuff, Neon.

Beasley absolutely schooled his guy on that play. Wow.

I think if Beasley's route was designed to continue, Romo would've gone to him. With Witten blocking up front, Beasley could've gone for 6 with how shifty he is.

Also, look at how beautiful that pocket is. Wow.

Any other plays you would like to see?

Tough for me to answer. Not having the All-22, I don't even know what I don't know. One of the things I really liked about this analysis, for example, is that it demonstrated the impact of a guy like Dez even when he isn't the target. By taking the safety away from the middle of the field, as you demonstrated, he makes that pass much easier to complete. I can't see based on watching the game live which plays are going to bring that kind of subtle nuance out. It's part of the invaluable service you're providing.
