Final Grade

I'm hesitant to give a letter grade, because it's like grading a student without seeing the results of their work. none of these guys have stepped on the field, and a lot of us are going by what we read in draft magazines and what we get on the Net. I will defer to a few guys here who did an incredible amount of research and helped us be as informed as we can be. To you, Cowboyjoe, in particular, I tip my hat.

I'm hoping, at he very least, that this draft will improve our special teams play, because it has been one of the downfalls of this team over the last few years. I also hope we get a couple of good young CB's, because you must have some depth at that position. Maybe Mickens goes on IR for a year to get healthy. Brewster looks like a plain-brown envelope guy at Guard, which is what Guards generally are. If he plays at Guard (or Tackle for that matter) I'm hoping that he makes us forget Duke Robinson.

If we get a speedy LB who can contribute to the pass rush, then we can feel good.

Bottom line: if the team is better this coming season than last year, then the draft may have had something to do with it.

I think this is a weird draft to grade, for most people. We didn't pick until the third round, and we got 12 guys but no real household names. However, when you look at where all of the players we got were ranked by NFL scouts and most of the draft "experts," we got an absolute boatload of guys who could have gone in the third through fifth rounds. And our 11th player taken (Mickens) was ranked higher than either of our third-round picks by some sources (as was one of our UDFAs so far), even though our top third-round pick (Jason Williams) was ranked as a second-rounder by another source. Our other third-rounder (Brewster) was ranked as a third-rounder by the most reputable source (Gosselin) but as a fifth- or sixth-rounder by some of the others.

I agree with this and you have to add in the overall "weak" rating of this draft class. I have stated elsewhere that the lack of aggressiveness in the 2nd round (particularly in a weak class) bothers me. I also think it is fair to say, even with all the uncertainty, this draft has not impressed many of the "experts." No grade from me and we'll see how many of this class make the team.

Pro Bowl is a good measure for how popular a player is within the league, not for how good of player is. Adrian Wilson has only been to the Pro Bowl twice, and he is a much better player now than the "other" RW at the same position, ever was (who has been 5 times).

The same happens all across the board for the Pro Bowl at ever position. Take Flozell Adams for example.
Somewhere out there a village is missing an idiot.

I give it a "C". They couldn't have done much better than a B- anyway with their lack of a draft-pick in the first round. They gave up too much for Roy W (in my opinion) and I would have liked them to go after a WR higher. Otherwise, it was a solid draft given the players they chose in the rounds they were selected.

I'd give it a C-

It seems to me they could have helped themselves a lot more than they actually did.

It started with missing out on yet another player they coveted.

This year it was Unger.

Last year it was Red Bryant.

Years past it was Daryn Colledge and Greg Jennings.

It seems they're identifying quality players and not having the foresight to go after those guys.

They followed up that move with what seemed to me to be a panic-induced trade down in which they were ripped-off by the Bills.

I think Williams is a bit of a gamble on a player with great measurables making a position change.

I think they reached on Brewster to be the swing-lineman that they missed out on earlier.

I like the McGee pick the best of the bunch. I think the kid has what it takes to be a good NFL player. Hopefully, they can develop him.

I didn't mind drafting another pass rusher, but I feel two was overkill, especially given the other talent on the board.

I think Knox, Casey, or one of the offensive linemen available would have been more 'bang for the buck' than another OLB was.

I wasn't crazy about taking another kicker, but if that's the plan they got a versatile athlete with a strong leg. Not a fan of the overall thinking myself.

I thought they got good value with their later round picks and did an excellent job on the defensive backs. I would have preferred a true ILB candidate over Hodge given Williams' position change. A true ILB would have been a nice fallback plan.

Good special teams help and a good chance of secondary help in the future too.
