Final Review of Parsons / Williams Trade

I wish people would stop comparing Parsons to whatever it is you assume we got for him we still have a 1st round pick left assuming all the money that we've already did to extend contracts like Tyler Smith and others early Yeah I think that people are under selling the compensation we actually got for him but I'm tired of talking about him he's a damn Packer as a matter of fact he's playing tonight against the Eagles who do you want to win who do you want to lose I don't know the compensation versus our division is really hard to judge right now..

We are far from understanding who may have won this trade or what the real compensation looks like there is no final review we must see what we do with that other first round pick trying to say it was essentially a second and we use that on Quinn and Williams blah blah blah no it's not essentially a 2nd I think you can trade one of your 1st round picks for a 2nd and a 3rd and now you have a better draft coming and that will also be because you have the resources because of the Parsons trade that you also didn't pay a man 45 to $47 million to play defensive end on a team that probably wasn't going to win big anyway...

Keep forgetting about that I mean Miles Garrett is the perfect poster child for this he demanded a trade except for he decided to take the money and stay now he's complaining about not winning and he's still playing great he had a 5 sack game that they got blown out in if you need any more evidence than that to realize the reason Parsons leaving was necessary even though it was unplanned and the compensation we got for him was very good It wasn't epic you're not getting anything epic if look how the Packers look at this how they had to pay this man all this money That is why you can't get a lot of compensation for a guy that you have to turn around and hand aid record breaking Market setting contract to.

Feel like both teams won how about that there is no getting fleeced absolutely not jerry did the right thing at the time even though it wasn't planned he made the decision to not overpay he offered him a very fair contract they didn't want it he forced his way out now both sides are benefiting let's move on....

Most likely they draft a DE with the Dallas FRP. Big menu there, and even before Kneelands passing they had been looking at guys like Phillips, Jermaine Johnson and Bradley Chubb. You can't really count on year 1 production from edge rushers, even top 15 picks, so I also expect them to bring in a vet
 
I hated the Parsons trade and still do. I would have kept Micah, but I also would have signed him early for a lot less money. For sure I would have avoided destroying the relationship between Micah and myself. So childish.

But I also would have gone after a top tier DT in free agency or the draft to play along side Micah. In fact, I would have gone after two quality DTs to play alongside Micah. That because I am not concerned about the flash that Jerry loves. I just want to win games.

But it is what it is. We have Quinnen Williams and the Packers have Micah.

It is impossible right now to evaluate the winners and losers in this trade. We've seen Keeny Clark play and he has not really made much of a difference. He looks like his best days are behind him. We have to see what Quinnen Williams looks like. Some Jets fans are saying he was not playing his best football this year. We also have to see what Dallas does with the extra 1st round pick in April, and what the Jets do with the picks they got from Dallas. I think we overpaid for Williams.

Dallas gave up the better of their two 1st round picks in 2027. At this point we have no idea what the pick might look like but if it turns out to be a top 10 pick then Quinnen Williams better be a force on defense to make up for it.

The draft picks essentially cancel out. trading up in this draft vs. trading down in next draft. Good point on Mazi's guaranteed contract.

Can somebody take a minute and talk to me like I am a five-year-old and explain to me about our draft situation with the number one pick going forward.

When are we giving up our number one for Q Williams? Is it this year or is it next year and is it our pick or the Green Bay pick?

I’m assuming we’re rooting for Green Bay to do is bad as possible, right?

2 #1's in 2026 1 in 2027, that is the bottom line with ours and the Packers.

I don't think we'll be able to completely evaluate the trade until a few years from now. It depends on what Parsons does with the Packers, what the draft return is, how we use the extra cap, etc.

To be fair, you'd need to compare him the real HOFer out this generations edge rushers, Myles Garrett:

As of today, those picks are 12 and 21.

Cap savings is nebulous because contracts get altered and change.
But GTD doesn't change.
QW has less than 20M of GTD money left spread over 2 seasons and Kenny Clark has 0.
Micah Parsons has 123M left.

Anyone trying to argue the Cowboys lost those combined trades is just not very smart TBH.

Micah is a really good player but paying him massive GTD money during what will almost certainly be a rebuild in 3 years would be foolish beyond words.
You can argue they should have gotten more for Parsons as many have but they wanted to steer him clear of the NFCE and the major media capitals.
They got their wish.

Currently Dallas gets to pick 12 and 21 this year for their 2nd round pick next year.
Draft math makes that worth a 3rd rounder this season.
So, you get pick 21 and Willaims and Clark to fix DT for Parsons, Mazi Smith and a 3rd round value.

And in Parsons's absence you have seen a possible defensive rookie of the year Edge rusher in Eze emerge as you created a starting role for him.

Dallas went from a bottom 3 DT group to a top 5 one.
And from a top 5 Edge group to a top 15 one (2.22 sacks per game).

Beyond all that you have shown you can get guys like Clowney and Fowler and James Houston off the street to play edge.

Looks like the Cowboys are going to get the better end of the deal. Especially if Wilson works out at LB. Williams is a given. He will ball. Add two first rounders and you can really move the needle on defense next year. Not sure if they will keep Kenny Clark but they should absolutely find a way to keep Pickens. Definitely a draft for defense...Edge, CB, S, LB. If they can get Diggs "right" it could be a totally different unit next year.

He was drafted to play LB...not Edge. Dan Quinn turned him into something that will ring the cash register but how much of that transfers to the field? Still...and undeniable talent...maybe being used the wrong way for too long, and it might cost him career longevity. I'd like to see him in a 3 - 4 defense. I don't think 4 - 3 alignments take full advantage of his skills.
 
I know this has been said several times before, but essentially this is the trade (subbing the 2027 1st with Williams):

Cowboys Lose: Micah Parsons, Mazi Smith, 2026 2nd round pick
Cowboys Get: Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, 2026 1st round pick

Clark is better than Mazi and a 1st is better than a 2nd, so the only debate now is if Williams will make the same impact on the defense Micah did. That, and what Dallas does with the extra first this year, determines who won this trade.

until we see what we get from the Draft picks and what Williams and Clark actually do for the next couple of seasons will we know.

We can spitball all we want...but Jerry Jones was absolutely going to give Parsons something in the range of 40 mil/year. He never really wanted to trade Micah until the bottom fell out. At the end of the day these rationalizations matter less than the fact that Jones was going to dole out the money...had the "handshake" deal worked out.

We "might" look back on this and see that it was Micah who expedited a short rebuild of the defense. Not nearly on the level of the Herschel Walker trade but this defense could be substantially improved next year...especially if Clark is retained. Get Diggs "right". Get your two first rounders "right"...shake and bake in free agency and you might be able to return to the heady days of that 2022 defense. But if you want to make a final run under Prescott then you need more urgency than you had in '21 and '22. You will need to make better moves and avoid significant mistakes like the Cooper trade.
