When it comes to the draft
@AsthmaField knows his stuff. I enjoy reading his comments because I'm to lazy to keep up with college players.. But I'm not taking a RB until rounds 3-5. The drop off in RB's round to round is not as significant as other positions. I'm taking CB, OL, DL, LB,QB or WR. whoever is highest on your board
That just doesn't make sense when runningbacks are a dime a dozen.
We need lineman worse than running backs.
You can hardly justify a 2nd rounder on a back due to the quality you can get up to around the 6th round.
It's just not necessary and wouldn't be prudent.
I appreciate that Vinnie.
I understand that point of view… and I share it to some extent. A high first round, like they did on Elliott? No, I agree. However, a pick in the late 20’s is different for me, as long as I feel like the runner is good enough to warrant the pick. And as long as the gap between that runner and the one’s you might get in the 3rd-4th rounds is big enough.
I think that Gibbs and Robinson are sufficiently better than all the other runners that under the right circumstances, I might use pick 26 on one of them.
Of course there are all kinds of caveats here: Gibbs would have to be the BPA by a good bit. My board would already have to be picked over pretty good before I would take Gibbs at 26. There are players that I like significantly more than Gibbs that would have to be taken already… and I doubt seriously that they will all be gone at our pick.
So, the odds are rather long that I would pull the trigger on Gibbs… but what I’m saying here is that I do think he is a late first round talent and I would pick him before I would take a CB that I don’t think is good enough. Or before an OL that isn’t that good, or an edge player that I’m lukewarm on.
Some other things come in to play as well: Dallas is likely to cut Elliott. Dallas is now running an inside zone, has an offensive line coach that has always generated a great run game, and the team is dead set on running the ball. I do think that Gibbs along with Pollard would create all kinds of problems for defenses.
I understand that you think that a 3rd or 4th round running back would give you something similar… and he could very well be successful. But what I’m saying is that I think Gibbs is sufficiently better than any of those guys and would be well worth the earlier pick. That’s the bottom line: I think that Gibbs, with his speed, vision, instincts and ability to catch like a WR would just kill it this year.
Could I be wrong? Of course, we all can be. But I really like Gibbs, and I think he is that much better than every other back except for Robinson.
Anyway, like I said, the odds are that the board wouldn’t fall that way… but if it did, I’d take Gibbs every time over someone who isn’t as good a football player IMO.
