I fear Jerry thinks Barr is another Ware, and he still gloats about that pick versus Spears.

Donald is the better player right now. Barr is more of a project because he's never played defensive line in his life. He was recruited to play tailback at UCLA.

I agree that Donald is better day one. But when I see a guy that has been playing defense for 2 years and is one of the best pass rushers in the nation already I can't help but think he can be a monster pass rusher. Plus the fact that we have zero pass rush ends on the roster right now and 35 DTs makes me lean towards Barr. My queezy feeling is that by some act of god they both are sitting there at 16 along with Manziel and Beckham and Jerry gets cute and trades down to 22 with Philly and we watch all 4 go right off the board. Beckham to philly, Donald to the ravens, Barr to jets, and Manziel to Arizona.

He is still a project whether he dominated or not.

He moved from RB to OLB

If the cowboys draft him he will be moving to DE.

Does not mean he can not dominate.

Of course some people may have different meanings for project.

But I would say that anyone transitioning from one position to another position to another position in a matter of three years could easily be considered a project.

I think he was a project when they moved him to defense. But he proved that he wasnt and he could grasp a defensive philosophy. He proved he could learn a posistion and do his job. Thats what i describe a project. He's beyond that.

That why he'll be WDE. OK if he's not the great against the run in this scheme.

Yes, last season Ware had minimal run contain responsibilities. He would crash down inside or rush wide on most snaps and was rarely required to set the edge against the run. When they definitely wanted to set the edge against the run, they would just bring in a player like Wynn (6-3, 285) to replace Ware.

Mayock on Dan Patrick today said Donald is slipping and if he doesn't go at 14 or to us at 16, he could fall to the mid 20s.

I believe that it's a 50-50 chance that he makes it to 16, maybe better. There are still a lot of NFL types that are not going to be gaga over a smallish DT.

I don't trust any talking head on a day like today. In the end, none of them know a damn thing, just assume everything. Only a fool can't distance the truth from the noise.

I would like to give a little insight here. The reason why Barr went to UCLA is because every other school was recruiting him as a LB. Slick Rick promised Barr a chance to play offense and that landed a commitment from Barr to attend UCLA.

He's never played DE full time and probably doesn't possess adequate size or strength to do so. I think he's a project in a 4-3, but not for a 3-4 (although he still needs to bulk up and get stronger, either way).

An Anthony Barr pick at 16 would be worthy of a shoulder shrug to me. I wouldn't love or hate it.

I agree.

I can see the Dallas brass thinking they have a 3tech in Melton now, and passing on Donald on that alone. Which would be lunacy considering melton is coming off ACL surgery in October.

His lower bowdy speaks for itself. He could need to get a little stronger n top. But this defense dont beat teams with strength. Its designed to beat you off the snap. Why do people on this forum dismiss everything these coaches say about what they look for in defensive linemen?

They look for speed. You can always get stronger. But you cant teach speed. These coaches will always choose the guy who can beat you off the snap over the run first guy. If you listen to these coaches you understand what they want and look for. If you dont you live a life of hated picks or confusion on what the Cowboys arent doing to satisfy what you think they need.

No one is bust proof, but Donald is 95% and Barr is more like 75% imo. Barr's lack of physicality bothers me, I don't know if you can learn that. He doesn't avoid contact, but I don't think I've seen him disengage an offensive linemen once. (granted I watched 2 to 3 games).

I see what people love about Barr, but don't know how you can put Barr and Donald on the same level, especially in this defense.

I believe DE requirements are a little different than DT. If you look at who Marinelli has had at DE in the past, Barr doesn't fit the profile all that much. Most of the other DEs Dallas has brought in are more Justin Tuck types.

Probably the best DE to play in this tampa 2 was simeon rice. He was 259 at the combine. Go figure

My feeling is that Barr will be our pick. Freakish athlete, fits the approximate size of a DE that Marinelli and Kiffin would like. We also went after center last year after going thru 6 different centers due to injury. It signals to me that we will try and address positions where there were rampant injuries the year before. Here's how I picked them since 2002. My picks are in parantheses:

2002: Roy Williams (Roy Williams)
2003: Terence Newman (Terence Newman)
2004: Trade down to 2nd round (Steven Jackson)
2005: DeMarcus Ware & Marcus Spears (DeMarcus Ware & Marcus Spears)
2006: Bobby Carpenter (Bobby Carpenter)
2007: Anthony Spencer (Anthony Spencer)
2008: Felix Jones & Mike Jenkins (Dominique Rogers-Cromartie & Felix Jones)
2009: no pick
2010: Dez Bryant (Dez Bryant)
2011: Tyron Smith (Tyron Smith)
2012: Morris Claiborne (Mark Barron)
2013: Travis Frederick (Eric Reid)

So my accuracy rate has been very good, although I've struggled a bit in the Jason Garrett era.

YR

Remind me again why we didn't have a pick in 2009? I think we traded down, right?

1. Anthony Barr
2. Aaron Donald

He says when talking to people on the team and such you get a feeling these are the two guys they are targeting on who they think could be available and in this order.

The same efforts apply to players who Dallas values (though not as high as No. 16). It works for all positions, but among D-linemen circled names include tackles Dominique Easley and Timmy Jernigan and ends Demarcus Lawrence, Scott Crichton and Kony Ealy.

If Barr is one of the 2 they're after, that doesn't fit Jerry's believing that the time is now for making the playoffs. Barr can't learn the position in training camp.

That could easily be the case. If we take Barr, there is your proof. Watching and hearing talk of Barr this morning almost convinced me that is the direction we go.
