I'll be glad to take a WR if we trade down and do it. I can live with an Olineman but I would also like that position better in a trade down.

I could buy into Ridley at 19, although I hate the idea of cutting Dez just to have to replace him with our first-round pick. Seems like a poor use of resources for a team that needs to get better.

However, I mostly agree with you on trading down if we're going to take a wide receiver or offensive linemen. It seems with the defensive tackles that there are three at most worthy of the 19th pick (and one of them is a pure 3-tech) and the linebacker quality drops off after Evans and LVE. Outside of Ridley, the receivers all seem to fall into the last first or mid-second range, and outside of Nelson, there's a decent group of linemen in that range.

The only position other than DT and LB that I wouldn't hesitate on is safety if either Fitzpatrick or James somehow made it to 19, but that's not likely to happen. ... So my pick group would probably be Vea, Payne, Evans, Vander Esch and Ridley. The only two I expect to be there are Evans and LVE and I hope that if Dallas chooses between them, it makes the right choice (whichever that is).

Of course, Dallas' actual pick will probably surprise me ... but who know is that will be a bad thing.

Fans seem to obsess over contracts when some of the big money these players want will never be seen. For example, Tyron Smith was given an 8-year, $97.6 million contract average big money ($12.2 million per year). His cap hit for the first year was $4.976 million, second year was just over $5 million, third was $6.8 million ... would anyone be mad at Thomas receiving that kind of money his first three years? Now, Smith did make $8.8 million the next year and is scheduled to make $17.5 this year (with a base that could be restructured if Dallas wanted).

Eventually, Dallas would have to take a hit if it acquired Thomas and gave him a new deal, but the team could easily get three or four "bargain" years out of him before having to make that decision (which most likely would be absorbed by another player's restructure).

Again, looking at Smith's deal, the final four years pay him $47 million, while cutting him in 2019 would cost Dallas $10.8 million (which would be an almost $4 million cap savings).

ESPN's Dan Graziano reports trade talks between the Cowboys and Seahawks for Earl Thomas "centered around" the No. 50 overall pick.

Graziano's reporting suggests the Seahawks are happy with the compensation, but Dallas will not pull the trigger unless they know they can sign Thomas to an extension. Considering Thomas told Jason Garrett to "come get me" after a game in December, it seems like he is amenable to a long-term deal with Dallas. It would not be surprising to see the All-Pro safety moved during the draft.

ET's contract demands will be all about the guaranteed money. High Dollar non-guaranteed salaries at the end of a 4 year contract will be meaningless to him. He knows it's his last big money contract.

I wasn't open to that at first but after due consideration, seems to me that LBs and DLs are less plentiful, whereas good WRs can easily be had later.
