Part of the reason half measures work out less often is that they have a shorter leash. Another part is that the players are often less physically gifted. In Savage's case, it's not a physical question, and we actually need somebody who needs time to develop behind Tony. If you're luck enough to get that in the third....someone you think you can develop into a possible starter...why wouldn't you take it?

Because it doesn't work very often. And even when you find a Romo in the rough, and no matter how good he is, and no matter how many first-rounders flop, there's always that first-rounder who turns out to be everything you want. And then you are at a disadvantage for a decade at the most important position.

This is just erroneous stuff which is why Phil Emery should not only not be allowed to run a team he shouldn't be allowed to talk football openly.....

Seriously this borders on a stupidification of the masses.

Drafting round 1 QBs is where you are at risk and where if you fail you will suck for 4/5 years.
You use prime resources, you spend huge money and you are forced to give them enough rope to hang themselves.

The total QBR last year showed ONLY 4 of the top 10 were round 1 picks playing for their original team.
The other 6 guys were all acquired via some other means.

At the same time if you whiff on a round 1 QB you can definitely expect to suck for a long time.

In the last 5 SBs there has been a match up 1st round QBs ONCE.

And when Emery is wrong after gambling on Cutler over the would have been cheap McCown he will be fired.
Emery was pro personnel guy for the Chiefs 2009-11. They started Matt Cassel... who was a former late round draftee of the Pats they paid a boatload for.

Aaron Murray Please

Murray might be the most underrated QB in this entire draft class.
He was better at Georgia than Matt Stafford who went 1st.
Murray has Romo type size and that's a legit knock but he played in a pro style offense and produced in the SEC.
He beat LSU which boasts an entire DL rotation of NFL draftable guys.

If I was taking a QB to develop in round 4 and 5 this would be my top target.
He needs to gain some weight but he is very accurate and more than athletic enough to play at the NFL level.
He is athletically similar to Romo in that he isn't a take off and run type but has in the pocket athleticism.
Has played in pro style offense and scouts have seen him make all the throws versus SEC DBs.

Tony Dungy said he'd have been the top QB in the 2013 draft class had he come out.
Not sure I go that far but the guy is seriously underrated right now.
He is far superior to McCarron.

I'm not a fan of drafting QBs who weren't accurate in college.

I have only seen Savage closely in one game, when VT played Pitt this past season. And I'm shocked that the quarterback I saw play is even being talked about in the draft period. Of course players can have an off day.

He's become very overrated over the past few weeks. He's got good size and a big arm but that's about it. The college production wasn't there and he's already 24. Don't really see the intrigue. I'll be really disappointed if we burn a draft pick on him.

He has the size and the big Canon for an Arm that NFL scouts fall in love with and always over evaulate as the draft draws closer.

Know who was a pretty smart QB as well - Jason Garrett! Didn't mean he was anything more than a career backup though.

Highly doubt Savage is the answer - except if Jerry is still around, maybe as a HC of the Dallas Cowboys in 20 or so years, lol.

He also has one of if not "the" strongest arms in the draft. He has a cannon!

ABQJr. told me this the other day too. He said I should get comfortable with Savage because he keeps hearing that the Cowboys really like him but I feel like this has to be a smoke screen. I mean, he has size but that's it. He doesn't have that great of an arm. He has slow feet. He doesn't throw well under pressure. He isn't very accurate and he can't evade or extend plays. I honestly don't know what the Cowboys could see in this guy. I don't like him at all. Quit on Rutgers, quit on Arizona, I don't like him. Guys going to be like 30 years old before he ever sees the field. Don't we already have that guy in Weeden?

I don't believe it.

Great physical tools but a bit of a primadonna with one hell of a soccer mom father.

I'd love to invest a late pick in him but would be perfectly willing to let someone else draft him higher.

If I'm spending a late pick on a QB, I'd rather look at Conner Shaw.

Though his rise makes me wary, physically he is very talented. Combine with the smarts, and I like him a lot

This guy reminds me of Kyle Orton in so many ways. And as w/ Kyle...you were always left wanting to see him take the next step. Which Orton never did. I think this could be a major trap/waste of a high draft pick. If this guy goes in the 2nd day....I'd laugh out loud.

Not overly sold on Savage, late in the draft sure but I think anything before rd 5 is not a good move. Just my opinion

Shaw is a poor man's Murray. Better athlete, worse passer. Fits in as the kind of guy the fans would love when he comes in but would be exposed later on.

I really don't see a QB I would take before the 5th round outside of the top couple, but even then I think it makes horrible sense because Romo is the QB the next 2-3 years if healthy.
