Jarron Gilbert is about 15 lbs shy of being a Jay Ratliff clone. Had the Cowboy's stayed put in the 2nd, we could have had him.

Gilbert doesn't have Ratliff's motor. Not even close.

I watch the WAC.

What I've heard about Williams is he's athletic and talented but hasn't been as productive on the field.
In other words he sounds like a good combine guy, but ironically wasn't invited to the combine.

He's got potential but is a major boom or bust type player.

WHAT? What do you call 17 tackles for loss, 6 forced fumbles, and 6 Passes Defensed in his senior season alone......

Not to mention the team's defense was built around J Williams - he was their impact player.

Not sure Gil got over the fact that Jerry put him out to pasture.

Thanks for the link. I will check it out.

Gil is still one of the most respected and revered guys in the business.
Perhaps Gil had his loyalty to Landry and to the nearly 30 years that he had spent with the star. Give him his due.

Gilbert is much more highly thought of than Ratliff was coming out of college. He was also far more of a playmaker in college than Ratliff ever was.

Ratliff was known to have huge potential, the problem was he was as raw as sushi coming out of Auburn.

90% of everyone probably wouldn't even know Gilberts name if he didn't self promote with the Youtube video which isn't all that impressive for an athlete like himself. He didn't exactly standout at San Jose State.

From a Pats sight:

One hot linebacker: DuSable grad Williams has 10 pre-draft visits
By Brad Biggs on April 3, 2009 6:52 PM

Jason Williams is going to earn his wings before the NFL draft. Maybe he'll even score a free future ticket.

The Western Illinois linebacker is one of the hottest risers with just three weeks to go as he crisscrosses the country getting in 10 pre-draft visits. That is more than any other player we've heard of to this point as the visit season cranks up with teams whittling down their draft boards.

Williams will travel or has already traveled to meet with Cleveland, Dallas, Green Bay, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Minnesota, New England, Seattle, Tampa Bay and Tennessee. Using the handy Air Miles chart on page 216 of the Bears media guide, that's 13,332 flown miles. Teams want to give Williams a physical and get a better chance to know him.

The DuSable graduate started getting traction when he performed well at the East-West Shrine Game and then turned heads at his pro day March 4 when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds with 14 teams in attendance. That was on a basketball-court surface though and there were some questions for a guy who is 6-1, 241 pounds. Some didn't believe he was that fast. Try faster. Any of those questions were answered when he showed up March 12 at Northwestern's pro day and ran again. This time, on a slow FieldTurf surface, he clocked in between 4.42 and 4.48 seconds according to scouts we polled at the event. The interest only grew.

Now, a guy who was not invited to the combine could come off the board as early as the third round. What is boosting him is teams that run 4-3 and 3-4 schemes are interested. He's got instincts, tackles well in space and is smart. We spotted Bucs linebackers coach Joe Barry at Northwestern where 17 teams were represented with some scouts saying they were there for the sole purpose of watching Williams. Philadelphia is also believed to be interested as NFL.com reported that Eagles linebackers coach Bill Shuey was in Evanston. When more than one-third of the league is checking you out, something good is bound to happen.

Get back to me about how Roy Williams was an elite safety up until the end. Quote some stats to really drive the point home.

The point wasn't whether Gilbert will be a better player than Ratliff. The odds of that are pretty slim. The poster I responded to made an over-the-top point about how Ratliff was more highly regarded coming out of college, which he clearly was not. Gilbert was the 43rd player on Rick Gosselin's top 100, a 3rd round draft choice, and Ratliff was a 7th rounder.

But he had a bad back.....

Lets forget about Gilbert already.... One thing I have realized, you are MUCH better off not drafting the guys that ESPN has as their "pet cat", as that player almost NEVER lives up to expectations.....

68. Mike Mickens
76. Stephen McGee
85. Michael Hamlin
89. Brandon Williams
100. Deangelo Smith

You'll notice that neither of our draftees who were in Gosselin's top 100 (Jason Williams and Robert Brewster) were in Brandt's top 100. That means we got SEVEN different guys who were listed in the top 100 for either Brandt or Gosselin. (Never mind that one of our UDFAs, Kevin Ogletree, was in Pro Football Weekly's top 100 as well.)

There were 120 players who were listed in the top 100 by either Gosselin or Brandt or both (80 players were in both, with 20 exclusive to Gosselin and 20 exclusive to Brandt). Out of those 120 players, we were the only team to draft seven of them.

Here's how many were drafted by each team (in parentheses is how many picks that team had in the top 100/120) --

7 -- Cowboys (2/4)

6 -- Giants (5/5), Patriots (6/6)

5 -- Bills (4/4), Broncos (5/5), Browns (4/5), Ravens (3/3), Texans (3/3)

4 -- Bears (2/3), Falcons (3/3), Lions (5/5), Panthers (3/4), Steelers (4/4), Titans (4/4), Vikings (3/3)

3 -- 49ers (2/2), Bengals (4/4), Cardinals (3/3), Chiefs (2/3), Colts (3/3), Dolphins (4/4), Eagles (2/2), Jaguars (4/5), Packers (2/3), Rams (3/3), Seahawks (3/3)

2 -- Buccaneers (2/2), Chargers (2/2), Jets (2/2), Raiders (3/3), Commanders (2/2), Saints (1/2)

If this was used to measure how well teams drafted, we'd have been the best by far. With only two picks in the top 100 and a total of four in the top 120, we got seven of those guys. Nobody else exceeded their number of top-120 picks by more than two.

Hate to burst your bubble Rush, but Chicago runs a 4-3 defense. Their head coach, Lovie Smith has been a 4-3 guy for over 10 years now.

Those stats definitely make me feel better about this draft, Adam. It seems like we reached according to Kiper's board, but did a heck of a job for not having a first round pick according to Goose's top 100.

And frankly, while I highly respect the work Kiper does, Goose is the one I always turn to for a grade. It seems like his chart is more reflective of what the NFL thinks, while Kiper's opinion -- as well-studied as it is -- is solely that of one man.

Please and Thank you.

You're a foreskin fan but that is oh so funny and accurate in the same breathe. I compare our draft to your Jason Campbell. Unpolished!!!

So let's see if I got this right.

He's big - 6'1, 241 lbs.
He's fast - 4.48
He's instinctive.
He tackles well.
And he's smart.

And the guy last until the third round?

(What's so funny is I searched my The Sporting News draft guide and he's not even listed.)

He has the measurements and numbers of a superstar. I think this guy quickly breaks the starting lineup by the end of the year.
