I agree about stopping the run. Carlos Hyde is the player they have to stop. Make Beathard beat you. Of course, Watch him go out and throw for 300 yards on Sunday. That would be the Cowboys luck but I am glad to see Lee and Hitchens starting together. I'm hoping that combo will improve the run defense and maybe have a shot at the defense at least being decent. How sad is it that I will take decent?

That's all I'm hoping for right now as well. Realistically...with 3 losses already on the schedule and such a tough schedule...a wild card might be our best shot this season.

I we crash...I hope we crash hard and get better draft position. But I'm not thinking about anything that unless we are sitting 4-7 or some such.

I still think we can make playoffs and win a game or two there.

stopped thinking...fixed it for you.

His point is kind of accurate.

There is no rationale that suggests the secondary has been decent. Nearly every major statistical measure of efficiency shows this secondary has not been good.

And you can't even try to blame the pass rush anymore as the pass rush has actually been quite effective this year.

Yeah, not sure how he arrived at that.

27th in interceptions
27th in opposing passer rating
24th in opposing completion percentage
25th in TD passes allowed
23rd against the pass by Football Outsiders in their efficiency ratings

Yeah, the secondary has not been decent at all.

Go deeper in your diagnosis.

(1)Our linebackers are getting killed in coverage. Teams are feasting on underneath passes.
For instance Gurley got TWICE his average in receiving yards against us

(2)1/2 our secondary was out injured or playing hurt in the Bronco game

(3) We are bringing in new guys and they are improving fast.

(4) Woods will be replacing Heath

#3 and #4 don't refute anything. They might be reasons the secondary might be decent in the future but to date, the secondary has not been decent at all.

Trying to blame away those awful stats on the LB play is quite a reach too.

Oh and one of those injured in the Denver game was Carroll. Who sucked.

I never understand why some struggle to admit what's patently obvious with this team. In this case the secondary has not been good at all. But hopefully they get better in the future.

Here are pro football focus rankings:
lewis: 83
Woods 79
Brown: 73
B Jones: 73
Scandrick: 73
Heath: 61
Frazier: 43

70-80 is average NFL secondary. So by these rankings:
1 above average
4 average
2 below average

I'd say that's pretty good...esp. since one of our best players back there (potentially) is Awuzie and health has limited PT.

I've taken time to study coach's film and my conclusion: secondary has been pretty good. Someone else here (xWalker?) took the time to study it and concluded the same thing about the secondary.

Heath and Frazier are less than satisfactory but we will see more Woods and Awuzie (health permitting) in those roles.

PFF is notoriously all over the map and shouldn't be taken as some sort of gospel.

And PFF's rankings don't jive with the actual end results of our secondary play. They are at the bottom for giving up TDs. Opposing QBs have a very high QB rating against us. Advanced stats like FO has our pass D as one of the worst in football.

All that being said, I do have a bit of hope as the season progresses, assuming Woods plays more for Heath and Awuzie gets healthy.

I certainly don't take it as "gospel." But it's far better than casual fans here watching a game with a six-pack in their belly.

But what team is going to trade a space eating disruptive d1 for late round pick

I doubt we solve the d-line with a mid-season trade. We'll be drafting re-enforcements I would think come spring.

I was a huge critic of the Jones regime back when they tried to fix things impulsively and with overpaid for free agents. They are --for the most part--doing it better now...staying young, using the draft, avoiding big name free agents that usually don't succeed. They will be rewarded and praised in coming years.

Dallas is poised to build a team that can enjoy sustained success.

In discussing the secondary, I know some of the stats don't bear it out, but I've seen players who are better than what the stats show. As soon as the play calls/scheme aligns with their abilities, the stats will catch up.

Also, I don't know this, but I would have to wonder how the play would be without having to keep a peripheral concern for the linebacker shortcoming. I know, I know, this one is an apologetic reach for the safety play. That is one area where I believe the talent just does not measure up, but I reserve final judgement until we see this game with the proper linebackers healthy.
