Competition will tell the tale about this defense this season. If Smith and Tapper can, in fact, play in the NFL that will be a hugh step in the right direction!

If either or both can play, it would be a huge plus in strengthening this team's defense. Essentially, two bonus draft picks added to this year's investments. If they can emerge as contributors, it could go a long way in turning a perceived weakness into another strength.

CBR, without a Zeke level RB, Dak does NOT have the historically great year he had as a rookie. Even if 15-20 backs COULD rush for as much or near as much as Zeke could behind our O-line (I disagree of course), there probably aren't many of those 15-20 who could also pass protect as well as Zeke or score TDs like Zeke. He took a ton of pressure off of Dak last year not only from pass rushers but from having to shoulder the whole load as a scorer. Ask Weeden or Cassel how much pressure McFadden took off of them. Not much I'd wager.

It's not just the gross yardage a RB runs for that effects the game. A truly great RB could add to a QB's effectiveness, get WRs more space to catch the ball by drawing more defenders into the box, and even help the O-line be more effective. 15-20 other RBs could not do that IMO.

Even if your premise was accurate, the only pass rusher in Zeke's draft worthy of #4 would be Bosa, and he went #3.

Dak would have done just fine with another back running for 1600 yards. Granted Zeke is very talented. And certainly having a nice pass rush and a better defense to lean on would have helped Dak as well. Give me war daddy all day long over the stud RB. There is a reason why one is considered a low end position while the other is one of the top 3 most important positions in football.

You are incorrect on a few facts. McFadden didn't miss any games in 2015. He had at least 5 carries in every single game that season. He finished with 1089 yards.

McFadden didnt get the bulk of the carries until the Randle saga was over. 1100 yards doesnt change the point. And he had 328 yards receiving which is 1400 total yards smart guy. I did say rushing, but it must have been the total yards I was thinking of. Had McFadden been the lead back from the beginning and got 300 carries and 40 receptions he might have come close to 1800 yards total.

And I am no McFadden fan.

The point remains.

He will need some time. Thats the killer here...unrealistic expectations. Charlton should be an outstanding player...with some experience and seasoning.

It never fails -- as soon as something happens that should be taken as a positive, some are compelled to cast a dark shadow on it. Never mind that rookies need seasoning as you say, there's always something to criticize. Even the best prospects around take time to develop. It's routinely the 2nd year when rookies show their wares. (no pun intended.) ;)

I love what Will McClay has done for this offense. To draft the 1 & 1A OROTY candidates last year in Dak & Zeke was every GMs' wet dream. Somehow, he has fallen short when it comes to our defense. We have several very good LBs, but to allow almost your entire secondary leave in FA, & to not have brought in at least 3-4 pass rushers over the last 8 years who are a QB menace is a black mark on his record. Lawrence & Gregory are both brain dead potheads. David Irving is going to miss the first 4 games for a drug screen failure, & Tapper has yet to show jack. With all of the players sitting there at 28, to then draft ANOTHER slacker who has to be kicked in the behind to get motivated is baffling to me. Jordan Willis is a self motivated beast who would have fit much better at RDE. Either that, or we take one of the top corners at that point, then grab either Derek Rivers, Terell Basham, or Willis, who was STILL there at 60. Anyway, for the next three years, we must draft D-linemen like we did O-linemen a few years back. If you don't have BOTH LOS secured, you can't win a ring--period.

That isn't a great investment, especially with a 4-5 year reset....

The reality is you have one first round draft pick at the end of the first round in the last 4 years... That's seriously anemic when you consider the state of the defensive line when we drafted Lawrence...
well they would have to have losing seasons , to draft higher and better DL, or trade the other picks away for 1 good player, who then
you just have to hope is worth it and not another mo.
when your 8-8 and then 12-4 or 13-3 your not going to get top dl in draft.

this is a schizo thread. anyone agree?
in total this will eventually be the best collection of DLine talent we have in a long long time. how do we complain about that.
i really wanted Kansas State Wilis, but found out that he isnt big enough for what we want. so i trust those who know better.

How can we not be happy with Zeke as our running back? i disagree that ANY rb could be as good. his talent makes everyone else better cause he with oline, "puts the team on his back". that isnt about yards, but about tough yards, when the game is on the line. I dont want just any RB behind Dak. Mcfadden maybe the perfect backup. now that i've seen the results wouldnt change the draft pick.
