I would love to be wrong, but I don't think Taco Charlton is going to be the answer to our pass rush woes. I think next year we'll see him playing a lot more at left end replacing Lawrence.

I can certainly see us in the position of needing to draft a defensive end and defensive tackle high next year.

I think we're stuck with Crawford again in 2018, but after that, he needs to be gone. Knowing that the team needs to start taking the line more seriously.

2018 1st rounder - Collins - 2018 2nd rounder - Charlton
mayowa - irving - paea - tapper

Depending on how well we do this year I would certainly think about trading up for Arden Key or drafting Harold Landry.

I think we do have the fortunate situation of having a stacked roster outside of defensive line and safety now, that they have no excuse but to invest in the line. Stop trying to get Marinelli to squeeze water from rocks.

I think the defensive line is going to continue to cost us games against playoff caliber teams.

So let me see if I have this right. This guy was drafted, has played across from Smith in practice, and has yet to put on pads. And he is not the answer.

I have to wonder what you thought about Aikman after his first season. Wow.

Good post.

The thing about it is..

if we play to form and get back to the playoffs and win there..

that leaves us a +30th pick and no DEs worth 'drafting..

Then what?

At somepoint we are going to have to sign a FA DL.

Last year they signed Thornton from the Iggles..

He disappeared.

We have to be better.

And when Romo's 2nd 14mil becomes available..

What then.

So essentially not this year or next year seems our best shots..

it will be after next year we should be our best.

IMO

What do you mean when you say "when Romo's 2nd 14mil becomes available?"

Also what free agent defensive end are you upset at us not signing the last few years? The best free agent defensive end to hit free agency over that period was....Greg Hardy.

In today's salary cap limited NFL can you really invest in all areas of the team? I mean you can't have an All Pro at every position. Sometimes you need coaching to make a difference. We have not had that for a very long time. The last time we saw a "coached up" was Tuna first season when he took basically Campo's 5 - 11 roster and made the playoffs. Since then, we have have not seen coaching like that. Sadly, I think we have a HC that needs an All Pro at every position to win when it counts.

It's certainly a question that can be asked.

For all of the accolades, the fact is that the Cowboys offense is loaded with talent, arguably better than anyone else in the league. It's not news that they're great, it would be news if they weren't.

The part of the team that did overachieve was the undermanned defense.

And as good as last season was - and it was great - the team came out in the playoffs looking unprepared and ultimately lost in the first round after being the conference's top seed.

Going into 2017, the team looks well-stocked from a personnel standpoint and hopes are justifiably high. Barring injury, if they fail to go far, I think coaching should be brought into question.

The coaching should have had a light shined on them at the last playoff game. They should have known what was coming from GB and still
weren't prepared to play. It appears to me that Garrett and his minions are not really prepared to play championship football on the big stage.
Paying big money to FA is not going to get us over the hump to the SB. Someone equivalent to Bellicheat might?

That isn't a great investment, especially with a 4-5 year reset....

The reality is you have one first round draft pick at the end of the first round in the last 4 years... That's seriously anemic when you consider the state of the defensive line when we drafted Lawrence...
Yeah, we should have used at least 2 of our 4 first round picks we had this past year on the defensive line????????

I don't think there is anyone "equivalent to Belicheck", but if the team stumbles badly for reasons other than injury, I think the coaching staff needs to be questioned.

That is what happens when you have the 4th pick in the draft and you take a RB.

Garrett is a clap happy front runner, nothing more. When we do poorly, he claps. When we do great he claps and fanny pats. Same reaction no matter what. When the chips are down and real coaching and motivation are needed the guy just doesnt know what to do. He panics with the clock management and in game management just like last year. Terrible at situational football. Has zero 6th sense as a head coach.

Half the reason we won 13 games last year was Zeke. Come on now don't fault the FO for that pick. I would not have wanted the drama with Bosa.

Love Zeke and Love the run game. I wasnt disappointed. That being said, it was poor value. We wont be up at the #4 slot for another 10 years. IF we want a stud DE we may have to pay 100 million for one. Gotta have one.

Bosa? He wasnt available, but if he was I would take him over Zeke in a heartbeat. Drama? What drama. Ill take Bosa and would have signed Peterson. Problam solved.

And we won 13 games last year because we had a young stud QB come in a give us what Romo did. Without Dak we win 5-8 games last year.

Not me... Zeke will most likely be the best RB in the league for the next 3 or 4 years. If you don't have the defensive horses ( which we don't), you have to win games with offense. We are built to win games with offense right now. Does that translate to SB appearances? Who knows.

And Gregory
And Crawford
And Hardy
And Thornton
Plus two picks for Lawrence

So If theY wouldve made BETTER use of those picks and assets, itd be a way different story.

Still for all we know Collins and Taco..maybe Tapper too...could end up being good.
I agree. They've invested some picks and money but injuries and drugs have derailed this group. Lawrence and Gregory should've been our starting DE's for the past 3 years and so far neither one has lived up to the investment, both have missed time with drugs issues and injuries. Gregory was supposed to have this off the charts wonderlic score so I doubt that his issues are intelligence related. If they are they need to get rid of the wonderlic test altogether. In the case of Lawrence his problem has been injuries, and trying to cheat his way back with the help of performance enhancing drugs. He should be back this year but I doubt he'll get a second contract from the Cowboys. So going back to the OP, we need to address this position again next year and just hope that our time consuming offense can help the defense stay fresh and be put in position to just tee off. Marinelli will be a busy man trying to scheme his way to apply pressure again this year.
