$5.5M is what the Eagles are paying Foles to be a backup QB. Wouldn't Romo cost us 5.1, since the rest is already guaranteed. I know, it's not gonna happen, but wouldn't it be great to have him around as a mentor and great insurance policy. Damn these players and their competitiveness.

Yes. But unlikely.

i don't think his cost is 5.1. he saves us 5.1 in cap hit if we keep him. his actual cost is like 14 million in base salary

The Eagles also have to contend with an $8 million cap hit from Chase Daniel's contract. They will probably cut him leaving that as dead money. Rumors are they will try to trade him, but who wants a short, weak armed, 30 year old QB with only 78 career pass attempts and that contract.

I think Dallas did more damage than the market ever could.

How?

Jerry runs his mouth, yes, but he never publicly said he intended to trade him. He said he will do right by Romo, maybe that was saying too much but I would hope every GM intends to do right by their franchise players.

It seems like the reports that came out last Wednesday about him being released were false. The team has been tight lipped about the entire situation. My belief is that they have been shopping Romo for awhile now and the market hasn't been too receptive, as a lot of fans figured. The team is now playing chicken hoping to get something. That's pretty much the best we can do, nobody really would believe the bluff we are going to keep him.

This encapsulates what backup QBs cost.

Everybody thinks there's this big "savings" by cutting Romo. Most of that savings will go to Josh McCown, or whatever veteran backup shows up.

It's more about future savings and getting him off the books as soon as possible.

I doubt the team will pay much more than 2M for a backup. I know all it takes is one play but we have a big 25 year old quarterback that has the full faith of the franchise playing behind the best ol in the game. Overpaying for a QB doesn't make sense.

Kellen Moore will be back for the league minimal before we overpay for anyone.

Somewhat, but Dak is cheap up until Romo is gone anyway.

I just wish we'd settle for having the best QB situation in the NFL for two years.

FWIW, Mike Garafolo is saying that there is offset language in Daniel's contract. That apparently the Eagles get some sort of cap relief in 2018 based on what Daniel eventually signs for.

Knowing our luck they will probably trade him and get a better return than we with Romo.

Keep Romo until a team offers something.

What does ridding Romo of his contract get us anyways? Nothing.

Id rather keep him then let some other franchise benefit tremendously for free.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's some intense negotiating going on with Houston under the radar, but I agree with your sentiment.

If not, and it's totally quiet, you know that Jerry and Stephen are having some intense discussions right now. Romo is like Jerry's 3rd son, but I doubt Stephen sees him as a 2nd brother. Jerry sees him as a great Cowboy, but also as a commodity like any other player. Stephen separates business from the personal much better, and I'm sure he feels less responsible for the poor management of his father.

Get something, or sit tight. I agree.

Apparently "teams are interested in a trade"....if true I would start an investigation immediately!!! That is BS....

We aren't going to keep Romo for a variety of reasons, but the reason you move him is his salaries in 2018 and 2019. But if you trade him now or cut him late in the offseason you get the same benefit so there is no rush whatsoever in making the move.

Not true. If he is a post-June 1st cut, the savings is 14 mill. If we bring in a backup at 5 mill that is still an additional 9 million for us to spend elsewhere.

It's only a $5 million savings through June 1. What good is the other $9 million at that point? That money will pay Zack Martin.
