I heard Carpenter on the radio this week. Sounded like a real cement-head.

Yep, nothing worse than a cement headed white outside linebacker, right?

It is worth noting that his draft projections doesn't neccessarily equate to what rank these players hold in their perspective positions.

I will be pleased if we take a player who can start and make plays.

I think Carpenter fits that mold.

But the results are all that matters.

Seinfeld was correct.

It is laundry, after all.

Name all the guys on that list that are 250+ lbs, can shed offensive tackles, drop into coverage, and rush the passer. These are prerequisites for playing OLB in Bill Parcell's 3-4.

That list gets a whole lot smaller.

The question is about value. Are we getting value with the #18 pick if we draft Bobby Carpenter. Its a perfectly legitimate question. Who cares how often Goose is right, but considering he's basing his opinions off of professional talent evaluators while most of us are basing our opinions off some draft website run by a 45 year old virgin in his mother's basement, I would say he's better informed than us. Everyone is so focused on who can step in right away next year. I want the player that's going to have the best 10-12 year career and make the most Pro Bowls. To say "Well, he's probably a slight upgrade over Rocky Boiman" isn't exactly what I want to hang my hat on with the 18th pick in the draft.

Gosselin has Carpenter rated as the 5th best OLB in the draft, so i ask you, is he worth taking at 18....btw here is his list on OLB

1. A.J. Hawk Ohio State
2. Ernie Sims Florida State
3. Chad Greenway Iowa
4. Demeco Ryans Alabama
5. Bobby Carpenter Ohio State
6. Thomas Howard UTEP
7. Roger McIntosh Miami
8. Clint Ingram Oklahoma
9. Jon Alston Stanford
10. James Anderson Virginia Tech

hmmmm?

1. A.J. Hawk...Would be perfect for us but he won't be there when we pick.
2. Ernie Simms...Too small for a 3-4 OLB and also probably wont be there when we pick.
3. Chad Greenway...General consencus is that he is not good at shedding blocks which is key for a 3-4 OLB.
4. Demeco Ryans...More of an ILB, too small for the 3-4.

Which bring us to...
5. Bobby Carpenter...Big, fast, OLB that can shed blocks, drop into coverage, and rush the passer who should be available when Dallas picks.

Many of those ahead of Carpenter are not typical 3-4 SOLB linebackers, and some like Hawk and Greenway may be more adequate to play ILB in a 4-3 scheme. It's all about getting the right player and right fit for your team. With that in mind, Carpenter is at the top of the list.
:hammer:

I hate that we have so many dang smart fans around here..Makes me look average. :D

i dont doubt that Carpenter would probably be #2 on that list if you asked our scouts and coaches, but for Goose to have him ranked 5th on that list, brings me to the question is he worth taking at #18, dont forget alot of you praise taking the BPA, which clearly he wont be at 18.

I think that if you were to compare the LBs and their abilities to play in a 3-4 vs. a 4-3 defense, Carpenter might be placed higher on that list. I'm not claiming that Carpenter may not have his share of shortcomings, but for a 3-4 defense, I think he may be better suited than some of the other top 4-5 LBs though. Again, that's just my opinion and if we do end up making a trade with Jax or anybody else, it may all be a moot point anyway because by the time we would pick in the 28th spot, the top LBs that we might consider may well be gone by then anyway.

Personally I prefer BPA that fills a need which fits Carpenter to a tee.

Check out Gil Brandt's list of OLBs.

1 A.J. Hawk
2 Ernie Sims
3 Chad Greenway
4 DeMeco Ryans
5 Roger McIntosh

Wild Cards:
Bobby Carpenter
Thomas Howard

Pat Kirwan's list of OLBs

1. A.J. Hawk -- Round 1
2. Ernie Sims -- Round 1
3. Manny Lawson -- Round 1
4. Kamerion Wimbley -- Round 1
5. Chad Greenway -- Round 1
6. DeMeco Ryans -- Round 1
7. Bobby Carpenter -- Round 2
8. Thomas Howard -- Round 2
9. Jon Alston -- Round 2
10. Roger McIntosh -- Round 3

Mayock's List of OLBs:

1. A.J. Hawk, Ohio State
2. Ernie Sims, Florida State
3. Chad Greenway, Iowa
4. Kamerion Wimbley, Florida State (OLB)
5. D'Qwell Jackson, Maryland
6. Rocky McIntosh, Miami (Fla.)
7. DeMeco Ryans, Alabama
8. Bobby Carpenter, Ohio State

It's not uncommon for Carpenter to be listed this low. I don't think he's a second round pick, but I do think it's a reach at #18. I think the Carp-love around here has perhaps exaggerated his talents just a tad.

As has the Manny-love.

I agree. I would not mind seeing Dallas get either guy but it is starting to get funny around here as people are trying to push their guy as the one we have to take and knock the other player as not worthy of the pick.

Monday? I think Saturday 5 seconds after the pick is announced.

So glad I won't see it.

Really it's all about the system the player is put whether is a QB or a OLB, so again if we are indeed sticking with a 3-4 defense then draft a player that really suits that!!
