For Fun: Dez vs Irvin

Irvin is the better WR. In a pass offense like San Fran Irvin puts up Rice numbers. That being said, Dez is getting close but I Don not think he will ever reach Irvin in terms of Heart and Leadership

irvin would be called for so many off PIs in todays game its not even funny. Dez would be the best WR in the game in that era. Dez would be what AZ thought they were getting with David boston coming out of Ohio State

It's more probable that guys like Irvin and Rice would feast in today's NFL where just looking at the receiver wrong will get you a penalty. The game is completely different and it would be easier for a receiver or a QB from that era to be successful in today's game because of the rule changes.

These two will be compared for many years to come, although they played in two differents era people will always compare. First off I am a die hard Cowboys fan and keep up with them 365 days a year. The only thing I see that Irving has on Dez would be route running and the ability to get open at any cost. Besides that I believe dez has every physical tool better than Irving. Their hands are pretty much great, not gunna say one has better than the other. I will say this and I'm not knocking romo because I believe he is a great quarterback but if you watch films of Irving every pass that he caught was very accurate and couldn't have been caught in a better spot. Aikman would hit Irving in stride and the best spot available to help Irving proceed to getting extra yards. Aikman biggest thing was how accurate he was. Romo is accurate also but not like aikman, aikman is deadly. If you want the better player, I'm taking dez all day long. He definitely the better athlete and football player!

Isn't route running and the ability to get open the most important thing?

I agree Dez is physically a better player than Irvin but Irvin refused to be covered, ran impeccable routes, and got open.

Michael Irvin caught 111 catches for 1603 yards in 1995 playing in a run-heavy offense. He had another season where he went over 1500 yards.

This was despite Irvin receiving constant double-teaming.

Dez hasn't broken 1500 yards OR 100 catches despite playing most of his career on a extremely pass-heavy offense.

My point here isn't to slam Dez, he is a wonderful WR, however, it is to point out that it' easy to fall into the trap that since Dez has more physical attributes that Michael Irvin did, he is a better WR. It doesn't work that way.

Michael Irvin maximized every iota of talent he had and in my mind was one of the greatest WRs who ever lived. Dez is a very good WR, who now entering his 6th season in the NFL, has never once been in the top 5 WRs in yards OR receptions. He has obviously been #1 in TDs which is huge, but he I think it points to the fact that he isn't same calibre WR as Irvin.

Regardless of which one you rate over the other one, we are a blessed franchise to have both.

Irvin is a HOF WR that helped Dallas win 3 Super Bowls. Dez' story is yet to be written.

Too soon to compare the two.

It's Michael IRVIN - not Irving. Work on it - 'die hard Cowboys fan'...
